Skills of New Independence and Following Multi-Step Directions in Creation to Christ
In Heart of Dakota’s (HOD’s) Creation to Christ (CTC) guide the Reading About History, Bible Study, and Science become “I” independent. I still loved my time reading history aloud with CTC’s Storytime History-Interest books. I also loved our Genesis Bible Study together using The Radical Book for Kids. Likewise, I enjoyed my time reading the geography aloud with CTC’s A Child’s Geography: Explore the Holy Land. Seeing my sons begin to form the habit of having a personal Bible Quiet Time using The Illustrated Family Bible was special. It is a habit they continue today in college. Likewise, the skills of following varied multi-step directions for both History Projects and Independent History Study assignments were incredibly helpful to their success in high school and eventually college!
The Skill of Completing Step-by-Step ProjectsÂ
Learning to complete step-by-step projects from start to finish is such an important skill to acquire. The History Projects teach these skills so well. They teach so many different kinds of skills using all sorts of resources to do so! They are also a hands-on response to the history readings. The step-by-step drawing is another sequential skill to be learned. My sons all vary greatly in artistic ability, but all can draw neatly today because of their years in Draw and Write Through History. They did care which writing utensils they used, and each had a preference.
The Skill of Taking on Independence Successfully
Creation to Christ is written for 9 to 11 year-olds, and a key part of this guide is students learning to successfully take on independence, follow directions carefully, and complete all assessments required in a balanced way. CTC is typically a 5th grade guide, and it is the gateway to the middle school guides. Looking further down the road, the skills taught in middle school prepare students for high school. So, that all just becomes more and more important as kiddos move through the guides.
So, as your children are taking on new skills such as completing projects step-by-step and taking on more independence, just know it is time well spent! If they are not very good at these skills at first, take heart! They will get better and better at them as they practice them throughout the entire CTC guide. Then, next year in Resurrection to Reformation (RTR), when projects become more in-depth with more steps and independent work increases in difficulty and length, your children will be ready and up to the challenge.
In Christ,
Julie
