Matchlock Gun takes place in 1756 when New York State was still a British colony. The French and the Indians constantly threatened Edward and his family. When Edward’s father had to leave to watch for a raid from the north, Edward had to take the lead.
Edward knew it was up to him to protect Mama and little Trudy. His father had shown him how to use the huge matchlock gun. However, this old Spanish gun was twice as long as he was! Would Edward be able to handle it if trouble actually came?
This book is filled with information about the early Dutch colonists of the Empire State and the firm faith they held and took with them to America. It is a totally realistic and moving story and a great read for children.
