A Living Books, Unit Study, Christ-Centered Approach to Fourth Grade World History
Preparing Hearts for His Glory knits together biblical and world history! It takes students on a memorable journey through time from the day of Creation through modern times. With a special blend of living books, engaging activities, and a biblical perspective, Preparing Hearts for His Glory helps students experience history as one continuous story to enjoy!
Living books provide the backbone for this world history unit study. A Child’s History of the World teaches world history from Creation to the 20th century. This well-loved classic provides a one-year overview of world history and features stories told in a fascinating, narrative style.
Grandpa’s Box partners beautifully with Child’s History of the World! “Grandpa” retells 42 key Bible stories that showcase God’s plan for redemption from Genesis to Revelation. Using his special wooden carvings, Grandpa shares Bible stories with his grandchildren that emphasize what they can learn about God through history.
Life in the Great Ice Age further adds to this Biblical timeline of history. Students not only learn what life would have been like in the Ice age, they also find out scientific reasons for this intriguing period of time!
Finally, Hero Tales – Vol I. shares true stories of 15 faithful men and women God used to write “His” story! This inspiring collection introduces heroes like Amy Carmichael, Samuel Morris, Martin Luther, Harriet Tubman, Dwight L. Moody, John Wesley, and many more – each at their appropriate time in history!
Making Memorable Connections
Preparing Hearts for His Glory plans for fourth grade students to make many memorable connections throughout the year! Students connect with their history readings through insightful reflection questions and related Bible passages. Guided Charlotte-Mason style oral and written narration sessions teach students important retelling and writing skills. Additionally, students hone their research skills via weekly research assignments on topics inspired by the history stories.
Students learn to use alphabetization, dictionary skills, and contextual clues to complete weekly vocabulary activities using assigned words from the history stories. They also illustrate their own staircase timeline of major events from history using cards provided within the Student Notebook. This timeline helps students visually track the flow of history, so they better remember it.
This fourth grade Christian homeschool curriculum brings history to life with fun projects like designing a spiritual coat of arms, creating an Ice Age cave painting, baking Egyptian seed cakes, planning a medieval feast, making a chart of “Spices from India,” and designing an Olympic brochure! Students complete a beautiful history notebook filled with colorful pictures, written narrations, vocabulary entries, and timeline cards. This special notebook provides a keepsake of their time in Preparing Hearts for His Glory that they’ll cherish for years to come!
Furthermore, older students can join in the fun by using our optional Extension Package! This set of living books adds a fascinating layer to the history study and was chosen for older, independent readers.
Christ-Centered Curriculum
Preparing Hearts for His Glory encourages students to read God’s Word and connect personally with the Psalms. Readings from key passages, Scripture memory work, and songs that set the Psalms to music provide natural connections. Students begin a lifelong habit of digging into Scripture for guidance. They read and discuss passages from Psalms using heartfelt questions that encourage reflection upon God’s Word.
Students learn to have a personal quiet time based on the Psalms. This special time includes prayer and praise, and helps students transition into having their own personal Bible quiet time in future guides. They copy Scripture memory selections in a Charlotte Mason-inspired “Common Place Book.” They also commit to memory entire passages from the Psalms through repetition, hand motions, and beautifully-matched music via Lead Me to the Rock.
