A Family Apart
In A Family Apart, life in New York’s grim 19th century slums consists of hardship. The poor but honest Kelly clan struggle to survive. Unfortunately, widowed Mrs. Kelly comes to a point where she can no longer provide for her children. Sadly, she sends them west on the Orphan Train, so farmers can adopt them.
Frances masquerades as a boy. She hopes the same farm family will adopt her alongside Petey, the brother she promised her mother she would protect. A couple with strong abolitionist sympathies, adopt Frances and Petey. So just days after their arrival on the farm, Frances ends up helping two runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad.
