masking tape issue.

Post by netpea » Fri Jan 11, 2013 2:35 pm

Oh no! I left the masking tape B on my hardwood floor too long. When I peeled it off it pulled off the finish. I now have a capital B on my floor forever.

Ack! I know from my interior design schooling days that masking tape gets stickier the longer you leave it on, so you have to pull it off as soon as you're done.

Um....maybe you mask out the names and dates of who did it? LOL...sort of like putting your kids' hand prints in concrete?

Oh dear! Hopefully you can make that B stand for something and have it remind you of something pleasant. I have used a product on my wood floors that has helped with scratches and scuffs, Orange Glo Hardwood Floor Refinisher. I have a recliner that tends to scuff up the floor and it has helped restore the finish to that area. You might give that or a similar product a try if you decide that you really don't like the B. :D

So sorry that happened! :( We use blue painters tape, because my husband was worried that masking tape would make marks and or take paint off walls. It's more pricey, but it worked great, even when left longer than needed on floor or walls! :| ( I've been there!!!)..
Hope you can cover the spot with some furniture :D :D

Ugh! Maybe you could try a little goof-off or a light application of a Magic Eraser to get off the adhesive. I'd rather a dull area than a sticky area that will attract dirt. Sorry about that! I use painter's tape as well.

Sorry to hear this! We had issues with masking tape residue on our ceramic tile when left on too long, so switched to electrical tape and it works much better.

No, I don't have any adhesive left on the floor, the tape literally pulled the finish off the floor. It was on the floor for 4 days, I didn't think that long enough to damage my floor. It's right in the hallway leading to the bedrooms. I might just get a carpet runner for the hallway. That would hide it. Our home is 85 years old so the floors have all kinds of dings and holes from running cables, but this one is a bit strange!

On the bright side, we have now moved onto the letter C in LHTH. If I make any more masking tape letters, I'll use white painters tape for ceilings, it is the lowest tack tape, and take it up right away. I left it down so long because my 3yo loves to play on the letter.

Thanks ladies for the ideas. I was quite shocked, my kids have put tape all over the house over the years and I've never had it damage anything, leftover adhesive sometimes but not actual damage. Life lesson I guess!

Oh wow. That's too bad. Maybe one of the previous suggestions will work, to restore the finish. Did it just make a dull "B" or did it remove color as well?

I have real hardwood floors too, I will try painters tape or something.

It removed color too. I have some maple floors and some oak, I don't know which is which. But anywhere the finish has come off, the wood weathers to gray.

This happened to us a few years back. We had just had our concrete floors stained, and the tape left a big A on our new floor. I was devastated. I suggest using rope from now on. Oh, and we didn't leave it on too long, but took it right off. :(

No words to help, but that is why we either go outside and use sidewalk chalk or we use string inside. DH didn't want me to put masking tape on the carpet because he said some stickiness would stay on the fibers and collect dirt so we modify any activity that calls for tape.
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!
