DITHOR 4/5 or 6/7/8

Post by Gwenny » Sat Feb 12, 2011 8:09 pm

I'm having my oldest daughter, that's still in school anyway, do the DITHOR starting pretty soon. We've never done something like that before. I noticed that the manual says to start anybody in 4/5 since the topics in 6/7 build on the things learned in 4/5. But what about for someone so old? Or, maybe I should just try some other type of literature study if this is "too young". She's extremely well-read, and we have been doing another program the past couple of years that is history/worldview/literature/Bible and chronologically based. The literature study itself I thought was so over the top, college level, like for someone wanting a degree in literature. We didn't do it, just read most of the books, but I thought it might be good to do a study. I wish I would've found HOD years ago. We've been a living books family, but I've never really done much of the narration, dictation thing, we just read a million books! :)
I think I'm having her do RTR next year with beefing up.

Any ideas?

It would depend on two things-how old is your daughter, and is she excellent at reading and following written directions and working independently? DITHOR 6/7/8 is nearly entirely indepndent, and has questions that really make the student think! I just started it last week with my 7th-grader, and she has needed my help more than I expected. I think after she gets used to it, however, she will be able to work without me. It's worth noting she was placed in in the "Gifted/Talented" program at her previous school for English and Literature. My 6th-grader uses level 4/5, which has more teacher involvement, and builds the skills necessary for level 6/7/8.

Lourdes gave an excellent response here already, so I am just agreeing! How old is dd, and how well does she do with writing, as well as with following directions independently? If you can answer when get the chance, we can chat it out more! :D

She is 16 and can follow directions very well. She's not behind, but I've noticed in trying to answer some higher level thinking questions she has a very hard time getting out her thoughts and writing things down. We've never really done much writing with her. She's the 4th of my original set of children, i've adopted 5 more, and I think I did a bunch with them and she always "tagged along" and I've forgotten that she didn't do things sometimes.
She could definitely do all reading independently.

I would definately get the 6/7/8. Carrie has a list of books for high school that you can use with it somewhere on this board. It is probably under one of the stickies at the top. Someone with more technical skill should be able to get you a link soon.

I agree with using 6/7/8 in that case. :)

I agree about using 6/7/8, and here is the link that may help:

You can do DITHOR alongside her for the first genre if these skills will be new material for her. But after helping her along with the routine of one genre, the rest follow similar routines, so she should be off and running then! :D
