Modern Times Extensions?
Modern Times Extensions?
I was just thinking about the planned guide for Modern Times (ages 12-14); will this have extensions for grade 9 (suitable for high school credit)?

Bumping this up.
I need this info., too!
It could make a big difference in the choices that I make for my oldest.
I am so bummed that we didn't find HOD earlier.

Re: Modern Times Extensions?
I asked this question at the convention. I don't want to talk for Carrie but I want to encourage you that after I spoke with her and asked all these kinds of questions, I am more than confident we can use the American guides for high school credit. I wanted to just share that I have one now technically in 8th doing RTR this coming year. We have upped her science and LA, she is in Algebra for math. I have added some to RTR and will see what Carrie's recommends on that when it is printed. I have decided we are counting RTR as her first year of high school. Then we will do the next two years of American/modern and count them as high school as well. I am really confident in that after looking at what else is out there and having time to chat with Carrie about it. My one question was on the geography guide because she will be in 11th when that comes out. But we have advanced her with counting RTR and I feel confident we could use that year as a world view year as well. We've decided order is our choice not what everyone else says, we can do geography whenever we choose really. And truly we need a year that we can add to it the things that we know we should teach, want to teach but let the world suck out of our schedule before we send our oldest"on her own". I am really excited about doing HOD for high school. Finally after maybe 5 months of frantic searching and looking at everything in person at the convention and elsewhere, I have peace with using HOD for high school and trusting God for the rest. I know Carrie will get back to you on this but in case any of my babble helps or just knowing others are going down the same path putting it out there in case it helps.

I should add that I am doing this with the intent that we may need to beef up a bit. I am fine with that and find Carrie is always generous with recommendations as well. But for us HOD for high school is the way we feel God is leading.

Thank you so much for sharing! I do want more info. about this but your input certainly encourages me. I do love HOD. I do. It is such a good fit for our family. But, I have been concerned and not sure which direction to go for my oldest son. He will be in 6th grade next year. He would move into CTC but I've been unsure of exactly what to do with him.

Re: Modern Times Extensions?
I know Carrie will answer but I have three in 6th grade that will do CTC. That puts them in Modern times or whatever it will be called in 9th. I am not even questioning those guys. I asked that question ages ago. That is just one year above the guide. I would feel pretty confident about that one being OK unless you have some stringent requirements for your state. I know Carrie is the one to ask and I wanted to hear it from her myself but just wanted to assure you while you wait I think you are on a good path.DHT1999 wrote:Thank you so much for sharing! Thanks so much for answering here, water2wine! I am so glad you shared this here, as it surely helps others plan ahead too. Carrie is writing like crazy, but she will certainly get back to you when able.

Re: Modern Times Extensions?
Christine,
Our plan is to include extensions within the area of history for the Modern Times guide (as long as we can find suitable material), however in order to give high school credit you'd have to raise the level of the science and the 3 R's.
DITHR can be used for grade 9 literature credit (when combined with higher level writing and grammar instruction). In order to give a full credit for American history in high school, you'd likely need both of the last two guides after RTR together to count for credit (as they would cover 1600's or so forward to modern times). This will vary from state to state, depending on your state standards.
Here's a past thread where I discussed high school options for using CTC. We will likely continue to share our thoughts in this area as each guide is completed. Link: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5635
Blessings,
Carrie
