Preparing spelling lists-- talk me through this. :D

Post by joyfulheart » Mon Aug 24, 2009 8:10 am

Wait a minute! Where'd the spelling lists go in Preparing???

I have been studying this book for weeks. LOL
TODAY we started, and I just realized there's no spelling lists???? I dont know where my brain was, but it never clicked.

I DID try to do a search, but all my searches said too many common words, wouldn't give me any results. I'm sure someone has already asked this before, but I just couldn't find it.

My boys really really need spelling reinforced, (and hubby insists on it anyway) so what do I do??? I sold the Bigger manual, so can't use those lists either.

Rest assured, spelling is there - it's just in the form of dictation. :D Dictation is really just a higher level of spelling. Children are responsible for learning passages along with punctuation and writing those, instead of memorizing single words within a list. Just flip to the back of your PHFHG and read the Dictation Passages introduction. It will tell you exactly how to go about this. I cannot stress how much this way of learning to spell has done for my ds. Dictation teaches dc to spell right within the context of writing, and this transfers to spelling right within the context of their own writing eventually (which is the goal of spelling anyway - writing words properly in a list isn't so helpful of a skill unless you're going shopping at the grocery store  ). Anyway, here is a past post about dictation that may help:

AGREED! We really need as much spelling help as possible. ( I am under the great thought that spelling truly is a gift!) We started dictation last school year around January "09 and I am amazed at process and the learning! We started Preparing today with 3 boys - each boy is at a different level of the 3 levels offered in Preparing! It went much better than I anticipated. I thought they would get upset when they did not get it perfectly the first time, but I read the instructions out loud to each of them and we followed through exactly as it was explained and I think they learned more about spelling, observation, self-correction and grammar in that one exercise than any spelling program I can pick out! I am thrilled with this part of Preparing!

DITTO!!!! AMEN!!! Now, in all of dd's writing, I'll say, "Now read over it like you do in dictation." She is becoming an excellent proofreader!! I thought, also, she would be upset when she got things wrong, but it's become like a good competition against herself.

I originally hung onto our former spelling program, not really believing that dictation would be enough. But now it's up for sale. :D

We LOVE dictation!
dd9 - Preparing with R&S 3 and Singapore 2

DOUBLE DITTO!!! This is my same, exact experience. I sold the extra program a few years back. I haven't looked back once! I've also found the proofreading skill to have emerged for my ds as well. Excellent description of that - it is like a good competition against himself.
