Posting how it's going in the high school guides

Post by chillin'inandover » Wed Apr 05, 2017 10:34 pm

Carrie,
I noticed that there isn't a spot to put how it is going in the high school guides. The topics stop at MTMM. Will you be adding WG, WH, AH1, and AH2 topics? I'd love to share how much we are enjoying our year. I'm sure others would like to share too. It may help those who are considering HOD in high school. Currently, the only posts are information about the new guides and how to beef up lower guides.
Thank you for creating the high school guides. It has made my son's freshman year so enjoyable.

Hi there -

I would LOVE to hear how your child's high school year has been going!

Next year is my oldest child's last year before... eeeek... high school!! I'm super excited and nervous, all in one.

I've started reading some of the World Geography books already in my free time, to get ahead of the game a little bit and to see what the first of the high school guides is all about, and I've enjoyed what I have read so far... The Archeology Book (just flipped through), Mimosa, Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus, But Don't All Religions Lead to God?, Sundar Singh, I Dared to Call Him Father (so good!!).

I would love to hear how you and your son felt about the books prior to starting. What were you were both looking forward to and what did he end up loving? Maybe a bit about your schedule, how you encouraged independence and in what areas, and any hints or suggestions you would offer.

I don't know anyone else who has used HOD for their child's high school years... my son is the oldest of the children in our town using HOD... so your insight would be much appreciated!! :D Thank you for thinking to post this!

Hi Ladies,

I have had one graduate using the last 3 high school guides. She did well and enjoyed the guides. She is an advanced student so she was ready to venture out into "college." She did one online college writing class and is now a full time student at the local university. My next oldest is in her second high school guide and is an average student with some weak areas. We trimmed down the guides a bit to help with her stress and mine. She has grow a lot in the Geography guide and I see growth in the new guide and we are only on week 2.

I love how the high school guides are put together. They are a very full education and if they have come up through the guides the independence will just be a natural part of doing the guide.

Don't let high school scare you, it is just doing the next guide. You all will do great and I know the ladies are here to help. They have helped me think through some ideas.

Have a great day!
blessings,
Stacey

I absolutely love the book choices for HOD High School but we have found the guides themselves a bit overwhelming. I'm looking forward to future revisions for my younger dd to, hopefully, make them a bit more concise. In the meantime, we've made extensive use of a highlighter to mark what of each box ought to be done. I'm very thankful for HOD and their work.

I have two boys doing US 1. It is keeping them on track, and the writing is a bit of a stretch for one--a good stretch that he needs. They do not tend to love school, but this seems to be off to a good start. My daughter used part of the geography guide and did the world history guide and the last two elementary guides beefed up for high school. She still tells people how great Heart of Dakota is.

Now that Carrie has completed the writing of the 4 high school guides, Heart of Dakota will be working on projects that have had to be put on the 'back burner' for awhile. One of these projects, as time allows and as the Lord provides resources, is the website. Until the next step for forward motion is determined, new folders for the high school guides won't be added (as the look of that portion of the website might be different). As far as the high school guides, my eldest son, Wyatt, has completed all of the guides thus far and is currently completing the USII High School guide for his 12th grade year. It has been a wonderful way to do high school! I have tried to post as often as I'm able on the HOD Weekly Check-In. That is where I share pictures and commentary on the guides we are completing each year. We just got started with this school year, so I only have 2 posts so far this year, but there are tons of posts on the other guides previously. I'll post some of the links here, but just know other ladies (such as LynnH) have shared on the check-ins as well through the years, so there is more information about the high school guides as well...

My son, like Julie's son is using US2 for his senior year. I used to blog about his week, but he is now 18 so out of respect for his privacy as an adult I am no longer doing that. I will say that he is really enjoying this year! It is a slightly lighter load for him(we aren't doing foreign language and he just finished up mathhelp.com College Algebra)this year and he loves that. I love that he is learning very practical things in the Economics and Personal Finance courses. I am already seeing changes in his mindset in regards to saving money. He really enjoys the history. I like that after so many years of HOD he can start his day as early as he likes( for him that cam be as early as 6:30) and only needs me for a few subjects and that is only because he is dysgraphic and sometimes dictates things to me and I do the writing in his notebook. I have been very busy with an elderly father this year and I don't have to worry about him not being able to finish school because I am not available.

I just love this thread.

A good friend of my mine is done homeschooling and she used HOD for the levels MtMM and WH1 (along with a few resources from WG). She is so sweet because she gifted me all of this material! My oldest dd is LOVING MtMM this year and I recently finally had time to peruse the WH1 guide and material (along with a few things from WG). For quite some time I have really been fretting about High School and wondering if HOD was the right fit for us. I know I have sung its praises up till now but last year I felt overwhelmed with possibilities. Well, as I spent time looking at the guide and looking at what is expected, I felt such an overwhelming sense of peace. My friend also praises so many of the books and stated how much her kids enjoyed reading them. She is also a teacher and talked about how these materials were so spot on. Her only regret was not finding HOD sooner. Her oldest had already graduated by the time she used HOD, her middle child was in 11th grade and he used US1 for 11th and then her younger dd was using MtMM for 10th grade. She was a bit underplaced with MtMM and didn't want to purchase another level, so she reused US1 for her dd the following year. And both of her kids loved it. So anyway, thanks so much for posting about HS ladies. I am excited to begin that journey next year! And I look forward to seeing everyone's comments to come about each of these levels.
