MTMM -- extracting DNA from a tomato

Post by FiveLittlePeaches » Wed Apr 13, 2016 11:25 am

I just have to say I was really excited for my oldest to start MTMM this year. I thought she'd really enjoy the science, with the intro to chemistry and biographies and so on. Yesterday she had to do the experiment in which she had to extract the DNA from a tomato. It actually worked!!! The experiment took a few hours to complete, but she managed to successfully extract the DNA and see the strands suspended in liquid, along with some little flakes. It dissolved when the alcohol warmed up, so I didn't get a chance to see it. If time permits, she's going to repeat the experiment for me over the weekend.

She's having such a great year all around. This fall she's starting HOD High School with World Geography. I wasn't sure if I had the guts to home school through high school, but since I ordered half the books already, I guess we're taking the plunge.
