I'm nervous about RtR w/ dd...encourage me! :)

Post by striving2Bprov31 » Fri Apr 01, 2011 9:53 am

RtR is a long way off for dd, but I'm already looking at it and pondering. We are only a few months into CtC. I know her comprehension and academic skills will grow a lot throughout this year. We will not be starting RtR until NEXT January, so I am getting ahead of myself a little!!

I am nervous about her comprehension with history!! That is our only struggle with CtC. She is just really thriving in every way with CtC. I am trusting that her comprehension with CtC history will improve as we develop this skill and move through the program.

But I'm nervous!! I really want her to be ready for RtR!!!!

Any words of wisdom today for me??? :) :)

I have not had the pleasure yet of using either program, so my advice is general in nature. I would suggest you work on her narration skills. Maybe you could take breaks throughout the history reading and have her narrate the smaller portions, rather than one long narration. This would also allow you to assess her level of comprehension throughout the readings. If she is doing the readings independently, you may want to do those together instead. Short discussions, questions, and narrations throughout the history piece should really help her comprehension. I have found that children make enormous strides as they progress through the program. She has a lot of time to mature and grow in her skills.

Liz,
I felt just like you when we first started CTC. Here is a post I wrote, scroll down to Carrie's answer, it helped me so much to relax about my ds's comprehension with CTC. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7681

I think if CTC is your first HOD program it would be totally normal for there to be a lag in the comprehension. It is so different than anything we used when we came to HOD there was a learning curve for the kids. :D But I can absolutely promise you that if your dd get's into a groove with CTC and it flows for her with the comprehension, as I am sure it will, you will have no problem going from CTC to RTR. Promise you that is the case. :D The programs are so perfect at leading from one into the next. I had the same feeling when I was doing Bigger looking at Preparing and the changes. It was absolutely an effortless change for us. If on the other hand in your gut you are feeling like you need to slow down a bit because CTC is a bit over her head then that would be a wise decision to make before you get to the end. But where she is at the end of CTC is pretty much where she is going to begin at RTR. So she will be ready if CTC is the right level for her. :D

Don't worry if your dd is doing well she will transition great. If she struggles just slow it down a bit and work on those struggles or let time work them out if they are of that nature. Either way the transition is easy. You'll see. :D

We are currently using RTR and are enjoying it so much! I'm sure you will too when the time comes for you to use it.

Both my boys think the history reading is easier to comprehend this year in RTR than it was last year in CTC. I don't know why, but it could be that CTC was the first year for them to read the history on their own, so naturally it took a while to develop the comprehension skills. I also think The Story of the Ancient World can be a little difficult to read/comprehend because of the style of language used, but it is a wonderful resource, especially when combined with the Family Illustrated Bible. The readings really reinforce one another.:)

I wouldn't stress about it. :) You have a lot of time until you begin RTR. Your dd will grow so much skill wise this year that I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you begin RTR how ready she will be. :)

Hope this helps a little. Sometimes all we need is a little encouragement and a lot of prayer. :)

Allison
