Can you help us pronounce this poet's name?

Post by John'smom » Wed Oct 27, 2010 10:42 am

We're on week 8 of Beyond, the poem is entitled Where Lies the Land? It was written by Arthur Hugh Clough and we don't know how to pronounce his last name properly. I looked it up, but can't seem to find it online. Anyone know? Thank you from me and my dc.

Tansy,
Thanks so much. We didn't know which sound to choose since "ough" can make 6 different sounds. It was driving me kind of batty not knowing of we were pronouncing it right or not. We weren't.

According to both:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/clough

and

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/clough

it should be pronounced "cluhf." I've been pronouncing it "clawf," so I guess I better change.
