When will you start HOD next fall?

Post by Tree House Academy » Sun Apr 04, 2010 7:27 pm

I am stressing this and I need someone to tell me it is OKAY! We usually start school in mid-July and take a lot of time off at Christmas. This year, we are not going to be able to start our new guides until the second week in August!! We have no choice. Then we will school for about 2 weeks and having a mini-vacation over a long weekend. I have never started so late before and I am concerned about the end date with us starting so late. If you start in early August, how much time do you take off through the year and when do you normally finish up? TIA!

That sounds about the time we will start. Probably somewhere beginning of August. We take a longer break at Christmas and it would be nice to finish by Memorial Day since the kids have a few camps , VBS we do in June.

We will probably not start until after Labor Day, but that is b/c of my due date falling right when we usually start, which is August 11. We have never started school until the first or second week of August and have always finished by the end of May with about a 2.5 week break for Christmas and 1 week of spring break. In fact, this year we are technically done with our required 180 days the first week of May, but I am going to keep going until the end of May so we can clock in about 10-14 extra days toward the next school year since baby's arrival will make us start later. All that to say, I'm sure it will be fine -- one of the perks of homeschooling is the flexibility, which I have to remind my paranoid self of constantly! :D

I think my problem is taking off a day here and there - those really add up. With CTC being a 4 day program, though, I think I can make it work better than what we were using for older ds. :) I feel better now! :)

We started the first week of August last year with Abeka and will finish up the 2nd week of May. However, that was with taking breakes when we needed to which was great and added no pressure!!! I think we're going to do a light class schedule thru the summer to work on grammar that Abeka didn't include as well as some history from Beyond. We'll keep up with our reading as well, which my son is excited about. As long as my boys get their daily swimming in, they're fine with school work.

Blessings,
Pam

We will start CTC and Bigger on Aug. 16 and finish by end of May, 1st week of June. We may or may not take the whole week for Thanksgiving, one week for Christmas and one week for Spring Break. There is usually a total of another week to ten days off during the year for various things - illness, field trips, family visiting. I usually start a week or so earlier, but we have other plans this year. I am still debating on whether or not to do Bigger in 4 days each week, or just do as written and stretch it out.

We will probably start Beyond sometime in mid-late July. We will start off doing only half one day and half the next day. Then we will probably be in full swing the first week of August.

Hi! We started this past year on the 1st Monday in August and will be finishing around the 2nd week in June. We took a week off at Thanksgiving, a week off at Christmas, and we will be taking a week off in May for a spring vacation. We have also taken some occasional days here and there for things like sickness, etc. We would probably be finishing up this year in early May, but I started the year out planning to do school 4 days a week and school year around, but I later decided that I would rather do 5 days a week and then take breaks when we want/need them.

We are definitely planning on starting the 1st Monday in August again this year and following the same plan. Hope this helps!

We start mid-August and take a week vacation for a family trip, 2 weeks off at Christmas, a day here or there for fishing with my dh, and we usually finish by Memorial Day in May. :D This year, we did CTC 5 days a week on the weeks we could, and we're going to be finishing in early May. We have our standardized testing then, and will be totally done by mid-May. Doing school 5 days a week (even though CTC is a 4 day plan) when we could really helped make it easy to finish school within the time we wanted to. Just an idea! :D

That is a great idea Julie. Thanks! We have co-op on Thursdays from Sept-Nov and Jan-April, but we could do 5 days on the months off and finish early. YAY!

I had hoped to start on August 2nd; however, between camps and activities at church and a trip with his grandmother, he is only off with non scheduled activities for about 10 days. So I am thinking we will start the 16th. That will give us 80 days by the end of December with 2 weeks off at Thanksgiving and 2 weeks at Christmas. We will finish no later than the end of May/first week of June. Not sure because I don't have a 2011 calendar yet. I do go 5 days even through it is only scheduled for 4.

We started mid-August this year (somewhere around the 20th...can't remember off the top of my head), and we'll be finishing May 6. We took a week in late September for a family trip and a week at Christmas.

I have no clue when I'll try to start this year since our baby is due right about then. I know we can't start until August with our county fair at the end of July. Since I'm due at the end of August, I'll probably try to get a routine going for a couple of weeks and then take a couple weeks off after the baby is born and gradually restart everyone. For my kids, it usually ends up being less work for me if we're in our normal routine. Letting them do "whatever" usually leads to far more discipline issues than if we're a bit more structured (even though structure here is still pretty loose :D ). I REALLY like the 4 day weeks this year in Preparing. Since I want to stretch out the younger guides anyway, I feel like I have way more leeway if we have to miss a day during the week for something unexpected!
