I think Singapore is moving along too quickly for my 9 year old. If he really thinks about it he can get the division problems done, but we are already moving on. I do have the extra practice book, but that only has one sheet per lesson. Should I just make up some of my own problems and do some everyday until he's more comfortable and then move on? He learns the concepts w/ Singapore and we've had a great math year so far. (This is our first year w/ Singapore) But I can't make up my own worksheets all year. What do you guys think?

Singapore is great on concepts. I do not know what level your ds is using, but concepts are often presented again at a deeper level in the next book. If, however, you feel that your ds needs more practice with division, Kumon now makes grade level practice workbooks that focus on skills particular to a specific grade. Like their preK-K workbooks, these booked are well laid out on quality paper and if a child is ready for the concept he should be able to move through the workbook independently. They do have a 3rd grade division workbook.

I wanted to add that these workbooks inexpensive. Like the younger workbooks, they are only about $7 at Borders or B&N.

Christy,

Which level of Singapore are you currently doing? Mandy is right that Singapore does go back over the concepts again the next year, and that often the first introduction is just meant as an introduction (not a concept to master). So, if your son is able to do the problems fairly well, even if it's pretty slow, that's o.k. He will get it again. It will make a difference what level you're doing though. :D

Carrie

Then, he will be working on division again in 3B! :D

Division is also addressed again in 4A. You may want to wait until at least after the division in 3B. If it is still bothering you, go with your gut and do some review over the summer.

Mandy's right! You're little guy will get division again and again after 3A. 3A is a definite hump in Singapore, where there are many new concepts that are introduced. However, if you persevere through, it will get easier. I wouldn't do additional practice on it, just keep on moving forward. We are in Singapore 3B right now with my son, so I have 3A in my very recent memory!
