Hi everyone can someone help me. I have been a loyal Sonlight user with my older children but feel like my 6 year old need more hands on activities. I am looking to HOD with my 6 and 8 year old. What are the items I need for this program? My son is learning phonics because he didn't want to cooperate over the school year so I gave him some more time. Both of them are using Math U See just at different levels. How much time needs to be devoted to each child?
Thanks so much,
Dana

Re: new to HOD
Many 6yos place best in LHFHG, and many 8yos place best in Bigger. I would look at the placement chart and then introduction and first unit of those guides (and Beyond, the guide between them) to see where each child places best.

LHFHG takes about 90 minutes a day. Using MUS might add a little time, but the non-math, phonics, and handwriting portions take under an hour most days. Long days are only when they want to really get into an art or dramatic play activity.
Beyond takes about 2 hours a day. Again, a different math or phonics/reading might change the time a little.
Bigger is the most teacher-intensive guide. It takes 2.5-3 hours a day. Some of it is semi-independent (you get them started, and they can finish an assignment), but it takes a lot of your time. Luckily the guides after Bigger are more independent, so although the student day is longer, the parent time is less.
