Science Placement for 8th with MTMM?

Post by LovingJesus » Tue Jun 27, 2017 11:50 am

(Original post edited and changed June 28th AM after more research and prayer, and after LynnH's and Stephanie's original responses.)

I am thinking of putting my oldest into MTMM for his 8th grade year coming up. On the placement chart he places very well into this guide.

It is in the area of science that I am not sure exactly what to do. He will be doing Algebra I with Saxon for 8th grade this year. I would say math, more than science, has possibilities for his future; yet, the LORD Himself only knows. He also has shown an interest in physics and chemistry.

His science coming back to HOD:
*Numerous experiments in his K - 6th
*The Evolution / Fossils course from Master Books for 7th (the same Evolution book that Carrie uses in MTMM, which is the reason I am unsure if I should do MTMM science or not). (without lab)
*Apologia Land Animals and Astronomy and Physics / Chemistry; the Astronomy and Physics / Chemistry were with the note book and lab write ups.
*Yearly science that has been from various places.

Would he place in MTMM science and repeat the Evolution book, Rev2Rev science with his interest in Physics, or WG science and work a year ahead with his Algebra I and interest in Physics / Chemistry?

Where would you place him for science?

My son did Algebra 1 with the MTMM guide and it worked out fine. We did TT though and I don't think it takes quite as long as Saxon. Also I think it would work to sub in the science from WG, but keep in mind that sometimes they do 2 lessons and that can take quite awhile to do. Sometimes science was the longest part of his day in the WG guide. However MTMM didn't take as long for my son to do as WG did so I think it would work. You would want the guide to see when the labs are scheduled, when 2 lessons are scheduled etc. The tests are not scheduled.

Thank you LynnH. You have given me some things to think about and pray over. I had realized that WG science would take a little longer, but I hadn't thought about the fact that he would then have two HS subjects increasing his time when I am already increasing it by returning to HOD.

In work-load he is definitely much more prepared for 8th rather than 9th grade work. He loves to read and wants to learn modern history so I think he will enjoy MTMM quite a bit. It will increase his writing though, which I want; but, I need to consider whether increasing his science at the same time is a good idea. On the other hand, I think he would enjoy the Physics / Chemistry integration and that interest would motivate him.

It does sound like having the schedule would be helpful and necessary.

Thank you for the thoughts! I will pray about this! :D

Have you considered maybe doing the science in Rev2Rev with MtMM? It is still physical science, but I bet it would be shorter days compared to WG.

Thank you Stephanie for the idea! :)

I am now going to compare Rev2Rev, MTMM, and WG science and see which one I think would be the best fit.

Thanks! :)

After looking at the samples I have gone ahead and edited my original post since I am not really sure what direction to take with science for him. Where would you place him from my edited post?

It's wonderful to have you back, LovingJesus! I know you are faithful in prayer and in searching out the Lord's will, and sometimes the Lord leads us in a different direction for awhile only to lead us back. He is always a good lead to follow! :D So though we missed you, I hope your years were good, but I must say, I am so happy to have you back here! :D You pose some good questions! A few thoughts I had on the possibilities you shared for science...

1) you could do the science as it is written in MTMM but omit the Evolution: The Grand Experiment portion and start the WG IPC science early instead, using the WG guide's plans; this would be nice as you'd have a bit of a headstart on the high school science - I LOVE feeling ahead! :D
2) you could do the science in RevtoRev along with the inventor study, and this would be great fun as well - this study was a favorite of my sons - you could do the advanced kit if you wanted it to be a 5 day course with more challenge

Personally, I'd not do the IPC science in WG alongside MTMM as your son's entire 8th grade year science. It is more difficult and better utilized in 9th grade alongside that guide. However, these are just my thoughts - may the Lord lead you to the best decision!

In Christ,
