Not finishing guide in HS ....what to do?

Post by quiverfull » Sat Jun 25, 2016 5:01 pm

I have two in high school. Neither finished their guide this year for various reasons :( I really feel like we need to start fresh in the fall, but I don't know how to make sure I am being fair with the credits I give them. Can I have them watch some history documentaries to fill in what they missed? One of them was within 7 weeks of finishing, but the other only finished about half b/c they started the year finishing the guide from the year before! I guess I just need some advice on how to make up what they didn't do so that I can in good conscience give them their credits.

I hope this made sense :?

Just remember that the schools don't finish up what they are doing either! We rarely finished a textbook or math book or work book in school. The one who only did 1/2 I would probably just continue on from there for the next year. Maybe they can do some over the summer? The one with 7 weeks left, maybe finish reading the books?

Were either one of them doing one of the high school guides or were they doing the lower guides? That might make a difference in what I would recommend. The one that finished the one guide and then did half of the second was this 9th grade?

No, they were not in a HS guide, but doing HS math and science Also, they are ahead in Rod and Staff. Yes, the child who finished the guide and did half this year was in 9th grade. Thanks for any advice :)

So is there a way you can combine the history of the 2 guides and call it something that would be High School credit worthy? Although if you are continuing on with HOD to higher level guides I really don't think I would stop mid way. I think the skill building is important to be able to handle the next level of guide. Did you finish science and math or do you plan to? I would make sure you finish those.

For the one that only has 7 weeks to go then for history I think you could just watch some videos to finish up or have them read the storytime books that are left.

quiverfull,

As I read through the thoughts in this post, I am thinking it would help to know which guides we are discussing and also what year these two students are in as far as high school goes. This will make a difference as we discuss possible options. :D Also, it would be great to know what these students possible post-high school plans might be. Do you see them headed for further education or headed right into a career of some sort? I know it can be hard to know what they might be doing post-high school, but if they have plans for a 4-year college that will make a difference too.

Blessings,
Carrie

Carrie,

One is in Revival to Revolution (9th Grade finished 1/2) and the other is in MTMM (10th grade 6 or 7 weeks left in guide). I think my 10th grader will take a year off and then attend a community college. My 9th grader is looking at going to a Tech school through the community college. Hope that helps. I appreciate your advice :) I have a DVD set on the Revolutionary war. Could I use that to help my 9th grader get caught up? Just looking for some alternative ways to finish up this year. As I said before, I think it is crucial for us to start fresh in the fall if at all possible.

Thanks again,

Renee

Quiverfull,

Thanks for sharing a bit more information. That does help as we ponder how to award credit for the work your students completed this year. :D

In considering that your 9th grader did the last half of RTR and the first half of Revival to Revolution, I would be inclined to list the history credit for the combined work he did as Western Civilization I on the transcript. This will work due to the content coverage of history being world history (which includes the history of western civ) in RTR and world history (which again includes the history of western civ) combined with beginning U.S. History (again western civ) in Rev2Rev. This would mean that in the remaining high school years he would list MTMM as U.S. History II (or even just plain U.S. History with no number behind it), and then list World Geography, and World History for his remaining high school credits for history as he completes them. This would allow him to earn all needed credits in history. :D

For science, I am thinking it would be wise to have your 9th grader complete the rest of the Advanced Kit from Rev2Rev to earn a full credit of Physical Science with Lab for high school. So, you could either have the 9th grader work on that through the summer to complete it, or you could have your student pick it back up in the fall and complete it then. After that he would move on to the science in MTMM. One other option, if he plans to follow the path of doing Chem. with beef-ups in MTMM, IPC with World Geography, and Biology with World History (following the scheduling in those guides for science for the most part), then you could potentially forego finishing the Exploration Education Physical Science from Rev2Rev and just award a half-credit in Physical Science for what he has completed and be done with science for his freshman year. But, you would then have to be sure to finish all three remaining sciences with lab for high school credit in MTMM, WG, and WH (which is very doable.)

For English, for your ninth grader, if your student did some combination of DITHR, Rod and Staff English, the last half of Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons from RTR and the first half of the Exciting World of Creative Writing from Rev2Rev, you could award a full-credit in English I.

For math, if your 9th grader did Algebra I or above, you can award a full-credit in math.

You could also probably list a half-credit in Bible for what was covered hour-wise within RTR and Rev2Rev, although that will be a bit of a stretch. However, since it is an elective credit which has more leeway, it would work for his ninth grade year.

At this point, with the work your son did, he pretty much finished a full guide this year, so he can stop Rev2Rev (except for possibly the science - depending on what you decide to do with that) and move onto MTMM (due to the fact that he will be a 10th grader this coming year). Typically, we wouldn't advise skipping the last half of a guide, but with your student's age in mind and the fact that he did complete a full guide pretty much this year (between finishing one guide and doing half of another) it would appear he is ready for a full guide like MTMM as a 10th grader. :D

One possibility you could consider for the upcoming year is doing school 5 days a week for your high school students during your more focused school months when it works (doing a full day in a day if possible for your olders only) to allow them to move more quickly through the guide on the weeks when schooling is going well. Then, you can downshift with your high school students to 4 days a week on the busier weeks. This allows the older students to get ahead a bit when things are going well. We school 5 days a week here all year, as our busy season begins earlier every year!

For your tenth grader, while not ideal to have that many weeks remaining, it is doable to count credit with what he has completed. It is true that schools often finish only 75% of the textbooks and are able to count credit for that so we can apply that strategy here if needed too. :D

So, your tenth grader would list MTMM as a full-credit of U.S. History II, a full-credit of Chemistry with Lab (if he did the suggested beef ups of some sort with the Chem.), a full-credit of English II since he is a 10th grader (if he did WWTB II, DITHR, and Rod and Staff English), a half-credit of Bible (if he did the Bible as written in MTMM), and a full-credit of math (if he did Algebra I or above). If he added any foreign language, you would list a half-credit for that. If he added to the Economics study in MTMM, you would list a half credit of Economics. If he didn't add the foreign language or the Economics it will be alright. We can work those in his last two years. :D

With this plan, your 10th grader would move on to World Geography and start fresh next year. He will need more time for that guide as it is a definite step up from MTMM. So, he may want to consider the 5 day plan for the weeks that it works for him as well (which I also mentioned as a possibility to consider for your 9th grader). :D I know that life gets busy and that things often don't go as planned. Just keep on plugging knowing that the Lord has the plan. Your kiddos did progress this year more than you think. They have actually earned the credits that you are recording, so you need to feel good about that! :D

They are still on a good academic path for high school and will each get through their needed credits by graduation if they stay the course. :D

I hope this helps!

Blessings,
Carrie

Carrie,

I cannot begin to express how helpful/ encouraging your post was. It really gave me the direction I needed to come up with a doable plan. I have been working through your email and mapping out their highschool years. I think I am almost done. When I am, I will post it here and hopefully get your feed back. It gives me confidence to have someone who is much more knowledgable in this area look over my plan.

Again, THANK YOU! :) I was starting to get so discouraged :( You have shown me the light at the end of the tunnel :D
