Does anyone have a different way they have made the cards in the Signers research? We are going to start this in the fall and my son is dyslexic and dysgraphic. There is no way he can fill out the back with info. Suggestions?

Nancy,

Could you make a box sized space in Word that matches the size of the back of the signers card and have your son type his details within the box? Then, you could print it and cut out the box and glue it on the back of the signer's card? Or, instead he could potentially dictate to you and you could write the details on the back of the card. Since this only occurs a few days each week (and the cards are short) perhaps dictating to you would be the easiest?

Blessings,
Carrie

My son with dysgraphia did exactly what Carrie described. We just made a box the size of the card and he typed his information and glued it on the back of the card. It worked out really well. You can see an example in this blog post http://graceandfur.blogspot.com/2012/10 ... 12012.html

Gweeny,
I'd love to know adaptations you've made for your son. My oldest son is 12.5 and will enter 7th this fall and turn 13 in Dec. we just found out he has dysgraphia, auditory processing issues, sensory stuff.... And I don't know how to adapt things. He's always been a slow moving kiddo, so I just thought we were dealing with character issues of laziness and all that jazz we see in boys this age. But it was much more!! This dysgraphia part is wswcually new for me.

That's a great idea! Thanks for the visual. I think this will be a great way for him and a great way to practice using the accommodations for things. We are just getting started with some helps and trying to figure it all out.
We just got him an iPad with a bluetooth keyboard. We are getting Voice Dream Reader app that will read text for him and also an app called Co:Writer and one called ClaroPDF that will read pdfs to him and he can type in them. We joined Learning Ally for the thousands of audiobooks--that has been amazing. A whole new world of books has opened up to him because I can't read everything out loud--he is plowing through books by ear reading that my others have plowed through with eye reading. LOTS of the books on the HOD lists are on there as classic audio or voice text--he can read along with highlighted text in different fonts. You have to have a documented print disability to join though.

I'm so excited to start the next HOD guide with him using some helps. I love the guides and started thinking that I wasn't going to really be able to do them with him. I was so concerned about the Independent boxes, and that he couldn't do them independently---that's okay!! He will get there in one way or another--he is still learning. Just because most people can read and understand things better if they read them to themselves by eye--that doesn't mean everybody does. He understands much better with his ears. Just like blind people do with their fingers.

Mom2Monkeys---poor guys--we always think of laziness first. I did the same thing. :( Message me and I have a couple of websites that are helpful. I'm still trying to figure it out.

Since you have an Ipad there are many apps you can use. This year my son had notebook pages that had more questions and didn't work as well for typing so I used the Scanner Pro app to scan it in and then there are a few different apps you can use to open it and type right onto it. The one that worked the best was the Adobe Reader app. For materials that come in pdf form as worksheets the adobe reader dc program allows you to type onto it also as if you were filling out and signing a form. The makers of the bible curriculum for the WH and AH1 guide were kind enough to send me the pdf after I said I would buy the study and not resell it, since it is supposed to be a consumable. Technology really does help our dc to be able to do the guides with just a few adjustments in the way they go about it.
