Extension Package Revival to Revolution

I have the Basic Package for my 6th grader and the Extension Package for my 8th grader in Revival to Revolution. Does my 8th grader read the extension package books and follow the schedule in the appendix INSTEAD of reading the basic package books? Or does she do both? This is my first year using this program, so any words of advice will help:)
