Praise for HOD and encouragement for those w/ dyslexic kids

Post by lmercon » Thu Nov 19, 2015 9:23 pm

My ds is 14 and using MTMM. He has used HOD since first grade when we started with Beyond. He is severely dyslexic. We've had to add in, for many years, additional work for his dyslexia. I've had to read EVERYTHING to him. I lost my voice for several months last year from reading aloud for so many hours every day for years. Every assignment had to be dictated to me, and then rewritten by him. Our school days were always longer than the norm. We actually had to take two years to complete CTC because of the enormous extra load of phonetic work we had to do. I never wavered from my belief that HOD was the best way for him to learn. Moms, hold on. Things do get better. My ds still has severe learning issues, but HOD has been wonderful for him. The years of listening and narrating have helped him to now read to learn. He may take much longer to read, but he is really learning. His written narrations, though filled with spelling errors, are evidence of a depth of learning I know he never would have had he used dry texts and meaningless worksheets. He is doing a tremendous amount of his work independently. He is motivated. He works well. He does quality work. He's proud of his work. He finds history and science exciting and interesting. I have finally been able to exhale this year. Yes, I still worry about the rigor of high school. I quake at the thought of him meeting all those credit requirements. I shake my head at the thought of him taking two years of foreign language when his native tongue is still a mystery to him. I literally cry at the thought of him having to take the ACT/SATs. But I know that with the education that HOD has provided, he will succeed at what he puts his mind to, God willing. Be encouraged.

Wow what a great testimony to you, to HOD and to God who works in ways beyond what we can fathom! It is so wonderful to read an update on your son as I have read your posts throughout the years and have been amazed at your willingness to read everything to him. That is awesome that he is doing so much of his work independently now. I have seen the same things with HOD and my dysgraphic son and how instead of being frustrated and giving up he still enjoys school and is learning to think through what he reads in ways I never thought he would. I am sure you and your son will find ways to make the high school guides work also. Last year was challenging as my son and I waded into the waters with the WG guide, but this year is much smoother.

What an encouraging post! I love to hear of others who are successfully using HOD with their dyslexic kids. Two of mine are dyslexic and HOD has been a God-send for them and for our whole family. Any one of my kids will readily tell you that HOD is their favorite curriculum, hands down. But for my dyslexics it has truly been the gateway to happy and successful home learning. They are appropriately challenged, they work hard, they enjoy their school days, and they experience such sweet success. So grateful for HOD!

Thanks for your post. We are going down that road too. We are taking two years to do Bigger and I have often wondered what happens when we hit Preparing. Your post is encouraging and reminds me that one way or the other we can make it work.

That is so great to read. It is an encouragement to me with my sons , one of whom, while not dyslexic, reads very slowly in order to comprehend fully. Our days also go long, with much motherly involvement  God bless you all. One thought I had for the highschool years is to maybe look into sign language for his foreign language requirement...it may be a bit easier to manage, and certainly useful.

I agree that sign language has been helpful for at least one of my kids with language difficulties...

I have tears reading this, Imercon! You are a beacon of light and encouragement to so many here on this board. There are a ton of ladies reading your comments and taking hope and encouragement from them. I know, as I talk to them on the phone and see them in person at book fairs, and many reference posts such as this. Many tell me they are 'lurkers' on the board, but they tell me they take so much inspiration from what is shared. Moms of dyslexic dc especially take so much hope from YOUR wisdom and journey shared here! In fact, I often tell them to look up "Imercon" and read anything you've written, as it is always beneficial and uplifting advice. So, the comments may not be many nor effusive to this particular post in this particular moment in time, but the resounding effects of what you say ripples through family after family, year after year, with old posts being new and fresh to those new to HOD or new to the struggles shared. I am so proud of your ds. I am so proud of you. Can I say that without sounding odd? I am proud of you from one homeschool mom to another, as I've 'watched' your ds grow up here under your expert care, love, and tutelage. He is blessed to call you 'mom.'

In Christ,

We have found the same thing to be true--that HOD is just so wonderful for kids with dyslexia. Or our son, anyway. :)

I had actually taken some time off of HOD because I just thought we needed to focus on the "3 Rs" for right now to get our son reading. I just was so worried about him learning to read that that was my sole focus. We still read other things, but our "school time" with him was spent on reading, writing, and math.

Several months ago it dawned on me that I was doing him a disservice. He *needed* to learn more, and he thrived with HOD. So we finished up from where we stopped in Beyond and have since started Bigger. I was so concerned that since his writing and reading skills weren't up to where they needed to be,that he would have a hard time with Bigger. Oh. my. goodness. It has been wonderful. I'm actually doing the extensions with him, out loud, because it's what he needed intellectually. He has grown so much since we went back to HOD in his memory, his ability to recall things, and in so many areas--and I think it's from the incremental work in Bigger. I really do. The skills that are included in Bigger allow him to still get what he needs in school, and it's easy enough for me to adjust it for where he is in other areas. Yes, it adds to our school day, but at this point I wouldn't change a thing. Like you said, I know he will get there, because I know HOD has given him the tools to get there.

Thank you, my3sons, for your encouragement! Wow! I had no idea that my little journey would be helpful to others. That blesses my soul and humbles me. Thanks for all you and Carrie do for us. My hsing journey with my kids is incomparably joyous to what it would be with any other program. As a former ps teacher, it's in my DNA to be a curriculum junkie. HOD has cured me! I found it many years ago and have never looked back or side to side or anywhere else! Thanks again!
