State Study

Post by jenn in nc » Wed Nov 11, 2015 4:41 pm

Two of my boys missed the study of the states in Rev to Rev (we didn't find HOD until it was too late for them to fit in all the HOD years) and I'm wondering whether I should try to fit that in somehow. I'm assuming that state study won't be included in the high school American guidebooks. State study is not required for graduation where I live, but I would prefer for my dc to be familiar with the material. Also, the book on the Signers looks really good (that goes along with the state study, doesn't it?)

On the other hand, their schedule is already pretty full...

What would you guys do in my situation?

**editing to clarify: I'm considering the possibility of trying to find a way to fit in state study only, not the entire Rev to Rev year. :)

If it were me, I would probably not include it. School can be a lot as you already stated. I would much prefer for my kids to have extra time rather than trying to include a few extras for them to do. That is JMHO though.

The Signers book isn't connected to the state study. If you really wanted them to do it I would make it a summer fun class. I would not try and add it to an already full schedule.

It would be very easy to add the state study. On page 5 of the Master Lesson Plan Book, you can choose the course length, anywhere from 6, 9, 18 or 36 weeks.

We're finding the study quite enjoyable.

You guys are right, there's no sense adding it to full schedules. I'd need to tuck it in somewhere there's a little room to breathe and think and absorb. I think I'll just hang on to the materials and be watching for that perfect space. It's helpful to know that there are different schedules. At this point I'm not too concerned about them putting together notebooks. I just want them to be familiar with the stories, etc. We'll see. Thanks!

I am doing only because it is required in our state.

I can see not wanting to miss the State Study, but I also agree that adding it to an already full complete HOD year of another guide would be too much. I like Lynn's idea of doing it as a fun summer activity. The State Study is fun, independent, has everything you need in the Appendix for colored cutouts, etc, and takes only around 20 minutes to do each day! Plus, it is just plain interesting and pretty witty at times. I'm always looking for a few low key things to do during our summer off that keeps up their reading and a little writing, and the State Study would fit that description nicely. HTH!

That sounds perfect Julie! I think I'll add it to my summer list... 8)

I am just curious, does this state study include a specific study of the state you live in? In OH, I am required at some point to teach Ohio history.

My co-op is starting to plan out classes for next year and my friend wanted to teach Ohio history. If history of the individual state is included in the RevtoRev guide, then I probably won't have my kids take her class. But if it isn't focused on much, then I will have my kids take her class. Her class won't have homework so it won't add to my day but I just didn't want to duplicate anything at co-op and in the guide.

Oh that is a good question, but I don't feel qualified to answer because we haven't been through the study yet. My general impression is that the study covers only the beginning history of each state along with some interesting facts, but not the entire history. Maybe someone who's been through it can chime in?

There are 2 State Studies with HOD. One is scheduled in the RevtoRev year, and it studies all 50 states. The other is scheduled in MTMM, and it studies just your state. Both are fun! :D

Great - thanks Julie. I thought I had seen somewhere that HOD did do an individual state study. I just couldn't remember where I had seen it.
