Living Library book in the World History guide

Post by LynnH » Thu Oct 08, 2015 3:01 pm

I just have to give a shout out for these books. I know they are optional and so many people skip them, but I have to say that the 4 we have read so far have been so good and truly bring the time period to life. My son finished "Cyrus the Persian" and kept talking about how good it was and how it was his favorite for this year. Today we just finished "A Sparrow Alone" and he said "Wow that was so good!" He wanted to know if there was a movie for it. He told my husband that he needed to read it. He now says this is his favorite of the year. In past years I have done all the living library/storytime reading out loud. This year we are splitting the reading and I thought he would complain about this because he reads so many pages the rest of the day. Instead he is eager to take it over from me because then he can find out what happens faster :D . Carrie thank you so much for helping to make my kid who isn't a reader and will tell you he doesn't enjoy reading, enjoy reading. He has also loved the lit books this year and when he looks and sees he has to read 25-30 pages in a lit book he doesn't even complain!

Lynn, I totally agree that the book choices are amazing! Now, it is still hard for my son to get through all the reading everyday, but he really does enjoy the stories, and ultimately, is very glad he has read the books. The way I look at it is - this is excellent preparation for college level reading and the amounts they will have to read. If I let him off easy from the reading, then I'm not really preparing him for the volume he will face down the road. And the book choices really do make the time put in very worthwhile. If it was all textbook reading, then I'm not sure what we would do!

And get ready for even more amazing reads next year with the US History guide! The first book about Jamestown was truly wonderful. Changed the way I forever will view that time in history. I am currently reading the Abigail Adams book and I love it! It has even inspired me in my marriage! (However I did dream that I was Abigail and I had to help John Adams get the new country up and running. Ha! That's what I get for reading right before going to sleep!) :D

The Lit books are amazing as well. The very first book, The Robe, really inspired my spiritual life as well.

Once again - so happy to have HOD in our lives!!

Tiffini now you have me excited for next years reading! My son is tired at the end of the day, but so far he has handled the amount of reading ok as long as I help a little bit on the living library, but he has even done that on his own some.
