Reminded again today why I love HOD so much

Post by LynnH » Thu Feb 19, 2015 6:58 am

It absolutely amazes me how Carrie has managed to coordinate everything together so well. My ds likes to watch any movies that are scheduled in the history activities box before he reads the World Geography box books. So today he watched a video on Lord Howe Island and Shark Bay. He then found those places on the globe and the map. They are off the coast of Australia in case you are wondering :) Then for the World Geography box he read about a man named William Dampier that explored some of that exact area and Shark Bay was talked about and described. My ds could easily picture it as he read because he had just seen it. Then in the living library (which I read aloud to him) we are reading about Florence Young a missionary to Australia and the Solomon islands and it describes a voyage and storm and talks about Lord Howe Island, and again very easy to picture since we had just watched the video. The attention to detail that Carrie puts in to these guides is something you just don't find in other curriculum and I know it is very time consuming to do that. Thanks again Carrie for all your hard work in making these subjects come to life.

As a side note for those doing the WG guide and are close to where we are I just saw that a cyclone is poised to hit Queensland. I plan on talking about this with my ds so we can spend time praying for the people that live there. Again because of the living book aspect of HOD he has more of a connection to the people than he would if he were just reading a textbook.

Lynn - It is so helpful to hear about your son's connections in HOD. That is just the type of thing that would help my daughter in areas like that. As far as connections with HOD, we have been experiencing connections in a different way. I was planning to start a thread about that, so I won't take the time to write it now. But, since I am no longer letting reading and math rob us of the enjoyment of other aspects of our school day (although math is still giving me gray hairs  ), HOD has been a huge spiritual blessing and encouragement to us. It's so neat how God uses things outside of HOD to reinforce what is being taught in the guide. I think I am benefiting from it as much as my daughter. :) I still can't express how good it has been to be back here. God is definitely using Carrie through these guides. :D

How wonderful! Makes me wish we were there already. I'll have to remember your sons technique of watching first when we get to that guide.

We are just finishing Unit 2 of WG and still transitioning into High School with its extra demands.
I'm completely amazed at how well the geography reading and notebooking is aligned. So much more is pulled out of the reading than I had pictured...it's just plain awesome how well this guide is written!
My favorite time of the day is the 'meeting time' when I get to learn from the Notebooking pages...oops...I mean "grade" the narrations. The left side has been layered so beautifully these first 2 weeks. I'm excited to see how the rest of the year will progress.

Thank you for the encouragement, LynnH. :)

Thanks for sharing this, Lynn! You described so well what I often try to explain when I'm talking about how 'connected' everything is in the guide. It is definitely that feeling of having the broader backdrop and putting in more and more 'hooks' as we go. I know Carrie will love to read this as well! :D
