HOD and testing
HOD and testing
Since there have been quite a few posts talking about how HOD prepares the kids for testing and how on grade level it is, etc..... we had our yearly testing this morning. This is to show everyone that HOD is more than meaty enough and definitely prepares children well for testing because they have the knowledge.
We have used HOD from the beginning. We have used Singapore math from the beginning. We have not added anything except we spent a week earlier in the year doing multiplication flashcards before just going back to our normal JUST Singapore. We don't do phonics, and get through about 4 genres of DITHOR per year.
Jayden is finishing up 5th grade, has about 6 units of CTC left and is in Singapore 5A and R&S4. Here are the testing areas and the grade level she tested at in grade.month format. --
Overall score - 9.7
Letter-Word Identification (just sounding out words) - 11.6
Reading Fluency (how quickly they read and process) - 7.5
Calculation (ability to do math) - 8.3
Math Fluency (how quickly they can do math) - 5.5
Spelling - 8.5
Passage Comprehension - 6.1
Applied Problems (thinking through word problems) - 9.8
Punctuation and Capitals - 9.1
Grace just finished 3rd grade with Bigger and is in R&S3 and SM 3B -- Overall score - 5.5
L-W Identification - 6.0
Reading Fluency - 5.3
Calculation - 4.7
Math Fluency - 3.3
Spelling - 5.9
Passage Comprehension - 4.8
Applied Problems - 4.4
P & C - 3.5
Julianna is finishing 1st grade with Beyond next week, is in R&S2 and SM 2B. -- Overall score 3.7
L-W Identification - 3.5
Reading Fluency - 2.9
Calculation - 3.8
Math Fluency - 2.5
Spelling - 4.0
Passage Comprehension - 2.0
Applied Problems - 4.7
P & C - K (she didn't realize what she was supposed to be doing on that portion of the test and the proctor didn't notice until she was grading it... it doesn't count until after 2nd grade here so she didn't redo it)
So as you can see.... HOD is a wonderful program that really stretches children beyond where they would be against other children their age.

Re: HOD and testing
That is excellent. My husband and I only test our kids every other year just to see if there are any areas that the need help in. We only test our oldest this year and this is how she did:
Vocabulary 5.3
Reading & Comp 7.0
Spelling 3.7 (she has a lot of dyslexic tendencies and can't proofread well so we aren't worried about this score)
Punctuation 6.0
Capitalization 4.1 (not good a proofreading but can follow the rules when writing)
Usage and Expression 5.6
Concepts and Estimates 5.7
Prob Solving and Data Interpretation 8.9 (wow!)
Math Computation 6.8
Science 9.2
Social Studies 6.7
Maps and Diagraming 6.6
Reference Material 5.5
Composite score 6.5
She is finishing 4th grade this year with Preparing. We were very pleased with the scores considering that in school they practice 4 times before taking the actual test. The only prep we did was getting the scissors to open the package

Re: HOD and testing
We just finished our first year of homeschooling using HOD and now have a 4th and two 2nd graders. We took the Stanford achievement test and found it very thorough and easy to administer.

Re: HOD and testing
I use the HOD recommendations only I don't supplement at all.
But I will say - we are an outdoor kind of family. And kids love the science section in the library So they will get out all kinds of books on nature and earth science in general.
The neat thing I found with this year's test specifically is that the topics were extremely varied. It was a huge variety. So I was very surprised she did that well because there were a lot of things where I was wondering if she would get them right.

Re: HOD and testing
My ds who is a terrible test taker always scores at least a year ahead in science and we have only used HOD science recommendations since Preparing other than a few fun science classes at co-op, but he always tells me he knows all the stuff they do in there because he has already done it. His reading comprehension is not the best due to his CP, but every year his scores improve and I know it is due to the great books in HOD and learning the skill of narration. When he came home after 4th grade he was below grade level and getting extra help in reading comprehension. His overall reading comprehension score is actually a little above his grade level now.

Re: HOD and testing
This is a great thread.
My ds11 has dyslexia/dysgraphia and I am very proud of his scores this year as they show continued improvement. He was finishing 5th grade and has used HOD's LHFHG, BLHFHG, BHFHG, K12's 4th grade and 1/2 of 5th, and just came back to HOD's Preparing to finish 5th. We used the Stanford online testing.
Total Reading-5.2
Reading Vocab-7.4 (when he was tested for dyslexia last year...the school was shocked that his vocabulary was so high)
Reading Comprehension-4.3
Total Math-4.5 (He is working in Singapore 3A & 3B)
Mathematics Problem Solving-3.7
Mathematics Procedures-5.7
Language-7.2
Language Mechanics-7.6
Language Expression-6.8
Spelling-11.3 (this one blew me away)
Science-8.2
Social Science-8.3
Partial Battery (Math and Reading)-6.5
Total Battery (Everything)-7.3
ds7-ending first grade. Has completed LHTH (both younger and older options), LHFHG, 1/2 of K12's 1st grade and now using HOD's BLHFHG to finish 1st and 2nd-4 days a week. We used the CAT online test Level 1 for entering grade 2 students.
Reading Vocabulary-4.0
Reading Comprehension-3.3
Mathematics Computation-2.8
Mathematics Concepts and Problems-2.5
Language Mechanics-2.9
Language Usage and Structure-3.3
Language Spelling-3.1
Language Auditing-5.5
My 2 older girls used the IOWA test. Several scores were post high school. They are officially finishing 7th and 8th grade. Both have been to public school, then completed BLHFHG, BHFHG, CTC, to charter school for 1 1/2 years, and back to HOD. They have been combined when doing previous HOD guides. Next year will be our first year with them in separate guides. They are 13 months apart in age.
