High School Physical Science

Post by andreamichele13 » Mon Mar 17, 2014 1:56 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have a ds who is starting high school next year and I really think he needs to be in Missions to Modern Marvels for 9th grade, but I am unsure as to what to do for Science. Our state requires us to have a Physical Science, but I don't see one offered through HOD. Could someone recommend a really good Physical Science that would fit in well with HOD/Charlotte Mason? We have done Apologia before, but I'm not a huge fan in the upper grades. It is kind of dry for my taste. I would probably need a lab with it too, but I am unsure of that, too.

Anyone else used MTMM for a high school freshman and had success? I am kind of freaking out about high school because it is new territory for me! I love the look of MTMM, plus I don't think he's ready for the Grammar/Writing component in the World Geography guide.

Any suggestions?????? :?
Thanks!!!!
Andrea

Or, does the Science in the World Geography guide count as Physical Science and I could count the science in MTMM as Chemistry??

The science in the World Geography guide is a Physical Science credit and includes the lab. The science in MTMM really isn't a chemistry credit because it doesn't have the math needed. If he doesn't intend to be a STEM major then you might be able to add some things like the Chemistry 101 DVDS to it, but it still won't have the math that is usually in a Chemistry course.

Ok, thank you!!! Any suggestions as to what people have done for high schoolers in MTMM? I just really don't think my ds is reading for the Writing/Grammar component in the World Geography guide. I'm so torn as to what to do! I'm stressing out about it!

I will be in your situation with a 9th grade MtMM. Here's what is suggested:
Science= 1 credit: Either use as a physical science or remove the Genetics/Evolution portion and add Ellen McHenry's Carbon Chemistry for a Chemistry credit

Andrea,

One thing that will make a difference in our advice is what your son is possibly planning to do after graduation. :D One option that you could consider would be to do Revival to Revolution's Exploration Education Physical Science (Advanced Version) along with MTMM (instead of the chemistry that is in MTMM). This would fulfill your physical science requirement for high school. Then, the following year you could have him do the Integrated Physics and Chemistry in the World Geography Guide. After that your son would do Biology in the World History Guide and then Chemistry in the guide that follows. :D

While this path does double up a bit on the physical science aspect, the physical science of Exploration Education (in Rev2Rev) and the Integrated Physics and Chemistry courses of the World Geography Guide do cover different things (simply because the IPC includes chemistry too and some different topics and presentations in the physics area as well). :D

If your son is headed for college into a science related field, however, then we would want him to have an advanced science course his senior year instead. This advanced course would ideally be suited toward his field of interest. It could be something like physics, advanced chemistry, or advanced biology. In that case, we would not want him to take both Physical Science and Integrated Physics and Chemistry, simply because we would want to to reflect an advanced science on his transcript for college entrance in place of one of those similar sciences instead. :D

So, if your son isn't college bound, or is bound for college in a non-science related field, then the path I shared first for science would work for your son. If you are unsure about what your son will be doing, let us know that too, and we can discuss other options. If you get a chance to pop back and share more about your son's possible future plans, we can help even better. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Carrie,

Thank you so much!! I think I remember reading that somewhere on a previous post about using the Science from RevtoRev. He will more than likely NOT be going into a science-related field! My only question is, is there a schedule just for the Science portion in RevtoRev or would I just need to do that on my own? No problem either way, I guess! I'm just so used to HOD's plans being done for me! Haha. Thank you so much for your input! I'm assuming there is no lab with the Physical Science? Our state requires 3 labs I believe.

Thank you!!!!!

The schedule for the science portion in RevtoRev is in the RevtoRev teacher's guide. You can either get the RevtoRev guide, or make a schedule on your own. The lab is included via the advanced kit for high school credit. HTH! :D BTW, that was a favorite science year of our oldest ds, and my middle ds positively cannot wait to do it! HTH!

Is everything else in MTMM high school credit worthy? Or would I need to combine RevtoRev history to make up a complete American History credit? I get so confused over these high school credit things!!!

Thanks for your input!!!

I asked Carrie about this very thing, and she said MTMM had enough American History in it to be worthy of a full history credit. HTH! :D

Andrea, for the EE science, please email me and I will email you with my weekly schedule. Keep in mind that it will have all my kids' info, but you'll see the science schedule. It's on the bottom of each week's assignment. I scheduled the Advanced version, so it's 5 days of science.

Thanks!!!! I am a little apprehensive about trying to do my own schedule b/c I would have no idea how to break all the books up. I sent you an email.
