MTMM Chemistry and GEO IPC?

Post by deltagal » Thu Aug 22, 2013 3:54 pm

Hi all,

We're waiting for our IPC materials to arrive and while waiting I thought I would have my ds read Tiner's Chemistry book which is scheduled in MTMM. I've been so delighted with how much my ds has connected with this book. (This doesn't happen very often : ) As a result, I find myself looking at the rest of the resource for chemistry in MTMM and pondering if maybe we should go ahead and work through the chemistry as scheduled. If we did this, I'm not sure what our high-school plan would be. Would the chemistry be enough prep to go from Chemistry to biology and skip IPC? Many schools use chemistry as prep for biology or do we really need the IPC? Or is there a way I could integrate IPC and MTMM Chemistry? We really don't need the labs. So, having a weekly lab is not necessary. He will be participating in several lab experiences throughout the year in Chemistry and Physical science so I feel like that ground is covered adequately.

Mathematically he has begun algebra, but it is a slow burn. However, we're definitely making progress. Academically he is college bound. At present he's not certain what his future will hold, but I notice that he's fascinated by the knowledge and expertise of orthopedics and physical therapists. I think he is science minded, but a LATE bloomer, so I want him to be prepared in the event he should pursue a science type of field.

I would appreciate any thoughts.
With Joy!

I'm not sure if you are asking if the Chemistry in MTMM would be enough for high school credit. If that is what you are asking then no it isn't. It is good for an introduction to chemistry, but really doesn't cover what even a High School Physical Science course would cover unless you add to it quite a bit. If you are going to add to it then you might as well just do the Physical Science in the Geo guide. High School Chemistry is much more in depth and usually more mathematics based. I am a physical therapist and if you think at all that he might go that way he should have 4 strong years of science. He would need to do the Physical Science in the Geo guide then Biology followed by math based Chemistry and then Physics if he is just a Freshmen this year. A Physical Therapy degree now requires a Doctorate. There is the option just to become a Physical Therapy assistant, but he would still need 4 years of strong lab sciences.

My daughter just started the IPC course. We have done 1 week. She loves it! She even said, "I would read this just for fun." This is the daughter who thought her school year should consist of calligraphy, cake making, photography, art, and home ec.

The MTMM chem resources are not at all high school level. My oldest is finishing up MTMM right now, waiting for the GEO guide. He is at the old end of the guide, and The Elements book was just very childish for him. He did learn, and we enjoyed the other resources, but I would house something else for chem for a 16 year old. The IPC course looks really good, and if you went ahead and bought the Geo guide you could do MTMM while doing the IPC and the labs as written in the GEO guide.

Oh, it's so delightful to read all of your responses. Here's a couple of questions to all of you:

1) What in your opinion characterizes "strong lab sciences" for high school?

2.) Are any of the MTMM worthwhile for high-school reading?

3.) "Since some of you have older students, do any of you plan on using the IPC course to differently than HOD has planned? Meaning credit hours, course description, etc.

I think we'll continue with reading the Chemistry book for the present. It looks as if my materials are scheduled to arrive on Monday afternoon, so I'll give them a look that evening and see where the Spirit leads!

8arrows I thought you would enjoy knowing that somewhere on the Pacworks site it mentions giving the IPC course books to science lovers as a Christmas present!

I like all of the MTMM resources, and I'm glad my son used them. However, he really balked at The Elements ,because it was childish.

I did contact the author of Evolution: the grand Experiment to ask about credit-worthiness, and I will be granting my son 1/2 credit for it even though he used it in his 8th grade year. (He just turned 15 and we did second grade twice so he is starting 9th grade with the GEO guide soon.)

I thought I read on the IPC site that the course itself was a high school credit without the additional labs.

The publisher says the IPC is good for two credits, one in chemistry and one in physics. You have to decide for yourself what credits you will award for the course, Carrie gives her reasoning for only awarding one credit in the science sneak peek thread.

Hello ladies. Great thread. I will be doing MTMM science, but adding in the Chemistry 101 DVD to make it credit worthy.

I was thinking I wouldn't need to do the IPC science next year and just do biology. My dd would be 10 grade then. Would you need to do both?

Even though Carrie has plans to schedule both IPC and A full Chemistry course in the four high school guides, you wouldn't have to do that, if you didnt want to. It just depends on your student's goals.

Does anyone know since Tiner wrote the Chemistry book used in MTMM and the IPC materials how much repetition there is between the two?

Also, I'm pondering the same thing Stacey is - if you did the MTMM chemistry with the 101 DVD's would that be enough foundation for biology? Or would the IPC course be a critical bridge?

I think the fact is I like the looks of both courses the MTMM Chemistry and the IPC and my student needs 4 years of science in 3 disciplines. I want to give him the best foundation possible for Biology. He is just beginning Algebra - understanding x is a bit challenging for him, but he's getting there. I spoke with Dr. Johnson at IPC and he actually suggested that we do a little more prep work prior to IPC, so my son could be really successful when he hits IPC. Dr. Johnson did say as a pp mentioned that he recommends 2 credits for the IPC - 1 for conceptual physics and 1 for intro. to chemistry.

I' think at present I'm leaning more towards using MTMM as is with the science and beef-ups and just moving forward from that point, IPC, biology and then ??

Just thinking out loud here. Grateful to have others ponder with me.

We are just starting out with MTMM with our ds in 9th grade and have chosen to do the Chemistry as written in MTMM while adding in the Carbon Chemistry and the Chem 101 DVD's at Carrie's suggestion. We are not strong enough in the mathematics yet to jump into IPC but will award 1 full credit for this years work. Hopefully we will then have the option to move into IPC in the future if our son desires to go that direction. If anyone else is using the beefed up version of MTMM Chemistry I'd love to hear how you are implementing the additional work into your school year. I am trying to think through how best to add the extra material into our week and still cover the Grand Experiment. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas - it really is a blessing to journey together.

I don't know about the labs, but there is basically no math in the IPC course. You will see a formula here and there, but you are not required to work them as far as I remember. It has been a while since my son did them.

My daughter will be a 9th grader doing MtMM. Where can I learn more about the Chemistry DVDs and the Carbon Chemistry that was mentioned? What company puts that out?
