How Is the Christian Perspective Brought Out?

Post by great2bhome » Tue Jun 04, 2013 12:46 am

In looking at sample days from the various programs, I'm seeing questions to be used after reading assignments, but no answers. Are the answers somewhere else in the guide, or do the children look back in the reading to find them? I've noticed comments made in reviews and posts about how HOD relates everything back to Christ and the Word. I'm not clear on how this is accomplished, other than with books written from a Christian perspective. Are there discussion helps in the guide to point us toward these truths, especially for use with the secular resources?

Also, is the curriculum designed with a Protestant or Catholic viewpoint?

I'm only using two of the first guides, but I'll answer as best I can. :D Soon more of these good ladies will add their experiences as well.

The discussion questions after reading selections are open ended; i.e. there are no answers. They are intended to encourage the student to think through what they have read and pull out the main points.

As far as how the Word is brought out, it really is in everything. The only secular resources I have come across is the math...which is no biggie :D The history ties in to the Bible study, and so does the science. The reading brings out character traits and how to work through life's trials in a Godly way, etc. I have used a lot of curriculum and I don't know another that is so Christ centered. Hope that helps a little bit. :D

The curriculum is Protestant.

I do know of a few Catholics here on the board who use it who might be able to help you adjust it if you would like. Hopefully they will chime in as well!

The biblical perspective is truly tied into everything. Of course there is the concentrated bible study that in the older guides consists of teaching the students how to have a quiet time, memorizing scripture, biblical worldview studies and specific bible study where they are using a workbook and going through books of the bible. The Science is from a young earth perspective and they often put bible verses into their notebooking for science as well as bringing everything back to God's creation. Many of the inventors studied were Christians and that is brought out in the readings and discussion includes how their Christian perspective affected their work. In history it ranges from the study of ancient history from a biblical perspective to looking at Missionaries and Martyrs of the faith to having dc look up verses and answer discussion questions to see how the historical figures actions and beliefs are either in line with scripture or opposed to scripture. When they read primary source documents they look to see if their is any evidence of the writers faith or belief system. These are just the things that I can think of off the top of my head.

The word that best comes to mind when trying to describe how HOD incorporates the Gospel and Christian principles is: SATURATED! It's everywhere in almost everything. Wonderful! It's what first brought be here and, besides many other things, what keeps me here.

From Creation through all of history, we can see in HOD God's plan for mankind. We also see how man's decisions, right or wrong, affected the country or the world in which we live. This is where character building comes in, whether in history or storytime. When decisions are made in any aspect of life, we are taught what God's Word says happens when we obey or when we disobey. Truly history is all about events caused by man's choice to either use their God-given knowledge to make wise decisions, or to make decisions to please self. We see destruction that came from bad choices, but we also see good that came to our world because there were many who obeyed God. Like many have said, history is (His)story. Scripture is used to support or show the error in character of historical figures. Science is all about creation, and even inventions and discovery come from a knowledge that is only given by our Creator. Bible and character are even incorporated in learning grammar. Our whole life should revolve around our Creator and our Saviour. That is what I love best about HOD. It does exactly that. :D

After being with HOD for 2.5 years, I made a dumb decision to stop the guide we were doing this year because of some educational difficulties my daughter was having. After being away for a few months, I regretted it and knew I had made the decision impulsively. Without wavering, I have committed to coming back in a year, to give my daughter time to focus on reading and math. But, I have been missing this very aspect of HOD. I have not found another curriculum so Christ-centered and in a personal way. :D
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. III John 4
