Science in HOD!!!

Post by 3sweeties » Sun Apr 28, 2013 3:24 pm

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share what my DS has been doing in Science in RTR so far AND after being with HOD for the past 4 years. One of the complaints that I hear/read from others about HOD is that it is "light" in Science, but I have actually found the opposite to be true and have witnessed just how deeply all of the notebooking, narrations, experiments, etc. are impacting my oldest DS now that he is almost done with 5th grade. I know that what he has learned will be long-remembered b/c he is not just answering multiple choice questions on a test, but is having to read, disseminate, and tell back what he has learned in his own words, with a few questions guiding him. Just wanted to share about the fruit I am seeing and hope it will be an encouragement to someone!!! :D :D :D

Jupiter:

Jupiter is a planet which is unlike any other. An example: Jupiter has 66 moons! The four most common are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. These are also called Galilean moons, named in honor of Galileo, who discovered them. Europa is the smallest and, in fact, is the smoothest object in the solar system! Io is the most colorful, Callisto doesn't even have a core, and Ganymede is bigger than Mercury! In this way Jupiter is like a miniature solar system itself! In fact, scientists recently found out that Jupiter has rings like Saturn! Jupiter has a fast rotation, at 10 hours, but a slow revolution, at 12 earth years. Its fast rotation means it has longer storms, up to as long as 500 years! Jupiter even has its own Asteroid Belt in one moon! The moon's name is Amalthea, and it's more like an asteroid than a moon. Jupiter must have been created by God.

(He obviously was excited about all this information since he put lots of exclamation marks!!!)

That is a great narration. I don't ever understand the science is light statement. I feel like it is a very rich science program. Just as you said my ds comprehends so much more then when he was in ps just memorizing things for a test or reading a chapter in a textbook. This year in Rev to Rev the combination of the inventor study with Education Exploration has been amazing. He has loved both parts. This weekend he was showing his dad his solar fan that he built and explaining how he figured out you needed to angle the solar panel just right to catch the most sun to make the fan spin faster. He is reading his Wright Brothers book and we are going to follow that up with a trip to the Air Force Museum. I am sure as we walk through he will spontaneously share different things he has learned.

Just chiming in to agree with you. My dc love HOD science. It is one of MY favorite aspects of HOD. I believe the content and methodology are quite sound and quite effective. And not that this matters, but my oldest who used HOD science up until his Freshman year of high-school has always tested at a high, high level in science. )The only reason we didn't use HOD science for high school is because it didn't exist. ) HOD science rocks!

I enjoyed reading his narration. :)

The "Io" moon, eh? I wonder if that is what the horrid Io caterpillar is named after... it is brightly colored and leaves a nasty welt if you happen to touch it.

I really don't remember learning anything that detailed about Jupiter in public school (now that is "light science").

Thank you so much for sharing this! I could not agree more. When I was trying to help Carrie look at a science focus for the MTMM guide, we had to rule out some supposedly 'harder' science programs because our dc had already done virtually every single experiment in earlier HOD guides. It was comical. We were like, "Oh, remember that one! We did that one way back in 'x' guide" Or, "That one was such fun - we did that in 'x', remember?" Or, "Oh, we have a picture of so-and-so doing that one, remember?" Anyway, we had to really search for something that would offer a new challenge, and finding the Chem/Genetics/DNA kits was such a blessing - as well as Ellen McHenry's, Tiner's, and biographies of scientists - as they added an incredible living books element to the study. :D

Riley did his standardized testing for science via the Iowa Basic Skills this week. I looked over his work today and realized he got every single answer correct. I really think it is the combination of truly doing so many experiments personally using the scientific method, partnered with reading so many excellent biographies about inventors, scientists, etc. that has helped our dc 'think like scientists.' :D The notebooking, discussions, comprehension questions, narrations, and all the other many skills incorporated into HOD's science through the years help our dc really think deeply about science - as opposed to memorizing this or that and just moving on to do the next thing. Thanks so much for your insight here 3sweeties! This is an important post and message to share with others who wonder if science done with living books, CM methods, and experiments/notebooking/discussions/etc. via HOD style measures up to other science programs... it not only measures up - IMO  - it stands taller. :D :D :D Sons who love science. Sons who standardize test extremely well in science. Sons who talk about scientists like they are their old friends whose findings are to be marveled at, utilized in solving today's problems, and built upon as we move into the future. Sons who talk about scientists' calculated experiments as well as their trial and error mishaps with humor, respect, and awe. Now, THAT's success in science! :D
