I know you're not finished with sneak peeks yet, but I'm curious if Health is going to be covered within the guide book?

Thank you again for all your family does! HOD has been such a blessing for our family :D

Carrie has mentioned that health will be in the World History guide with biology. It's in the beginning of this thread.

Will there be samples of the high school resources and guide for this weekends homeschool convention in Cincinnati, Ohio? Here's hoping! :D

I was looking at a particular college's Homeschool transcript template, and noticed it had a section to mark if the course was an AP/IB/or honors course. I completely forgot about that sort of thing! I understand that AP courses must be approved by the college board now. Would/will any of the courses offered in the guide(s) be considered honors? I'm wondering if a student can do the guide as written, take one of the AP tests, and put honors for the course.

** not an emergency question, just want to ask before I forget**

We are planning to use the New World Geography Guide with my daughter for 9th grade. Do you have any suggestions for Art and Music? Are those subjects required for high school? I didn't see them mentioned in the sneak peeks, so I wasn't sure if they were going to be included in any of the high school guides or if this was something we would need to cover on our own. She is my oldest, so this will be our first time planning out high school. Thanks! Amanda

Florence,

I'm sorry I'm just getting back to you now. The times you listed will be pretty close. You can plan on 6 1/2 credit hours taking 6 1/2 hours a day (4 days a week). Grammar and composition will alternate in a 30 min. time slot daily. Literature will be 45 min. a day every day. :D

Science may vary, being somewhat less on reading/answering questions days and longer on lab days. So, it will even out to what you've listed overall. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

For those of you attending book conventions, we do have the sample week of plans there for the new guide for you to view along with all of the resources that go along with the World Geography guide for you to see as well! :D We have pricing sheets with descriptions from the new section of the catalog that you can take with you too. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

As far as the AP tests go, as you already mentioned, AP courses have designated texts that are used to prepare for the AP exam. Since we don't wish for the AP exam to dictate our curriculum selections, we would encourage you to consider looking at CLEP exams instead for credit, rather than looking to earn AP credit. :D This would be a better fit with a more attainable goal than using our materials to study for the ever-changing AP exam.

As far as honors courses go, honors course distinction is usually for coursework that goes far above and beyond typical coursework. With homeschooling, an honors distinction does not mean as much to a college as they are not sure what "you" as the grader considers honors level coursework to be. So, while we do have some areas that may fall under the honors heading in some instances, it wouldn't always hold true in all cases. Even umbrella schools vary widely in what constitutes honors level distinction. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Amanda,

Most colleges want to see .5 up to one full credit of fine arts on the transcript. We have not decided yet for sure whether we will include something like this in our line-up, but we are continuing to research and ponder. I have included fine arts in my own son's coursework, but we know that so many families have different ways that they would like to approach the fine arts credit. :D Performing arts often falls under this category too. :D

We would most likely be looking at a Music Appreciation or Art Appreciation credit, but we will see. We definitely have this in mind as we are making decisions as to what should be included in which year. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

If this has been discussed before, please feel free to point me in the right direction! My question here is this: For my son, who will be entering 10th grade in the fall, will the Geography guide be 'enough' as far as credits go for high school? He's a year ahead of the high school guides, as far as being able to do each within the year intended, so I wasn't sure how this would affect his credits, if at all, if we decide to come back to HOD for him. He has expressed an interest in doing so. Any thoughts?

We've been using HOD for several years now and my dd will be using this guide for 10th as well. We'll be using it as written with the exception of the Math and Literature since my dd used the BJU 9th grade lit this year. We are considering the Smarr Intro to Lit course instead and we use BJU for math so she'll be doing Geometry.

ETA: Oops! forgot to tell you that yes, it should be quite adequate for credits unless you need to make changes as we did above.
Hope this helps some...
Charlene

Great, thanks Charlene, that is helpful. We have used HOD before for a few years and then with moves and new babies left for a few. I am excited about getting at least some of the kids back to HOD in the fall! In talking about it my oldest mentioned that he might like to do this too, so I wanted to check. I know they are meaty enough. If we did not have to concern ourselves with transcripts for college I would dive right in and never even ask. I just know some of the younger guides state that they are not to be used for full credit for high school so wasn't sure about this one. ;) Thanks, again!
