Bigger with a 5th grader

Post by titus2 » Sun Sep 09, 2012 3:44 pm

My ds is 10 and in 5th grade. I am doing 5th grade rod and staff English and 2b Singapore. He can read well but his comprehension is behind thus the reason for placing him in bigger without extensions. Is this ok? Am I holding him back? Should I push him more or just let him be? When I look at the placement chart he places in bigger.

My dd will be doing some of Bigger when she is 10, in 4th grade, because we will not get all of it done this year. She is not using extensions. HOD is written for age levels, so I wouldn't worry about grade level. If your ds places in Bigger, I think he would be fine using that. There are always extensions if you need them. :D

I just wanted to add that the books used in Bigger are perfect for a 10 year old. They are very "universal", and I consider them to be of equal benefit for olders as well as youngers.

Bigger sounds good if that is where he places. However, I wonder if you have him placed too high in grammar-unless he has already done the previous level of Rod and Staff English, I would consider having him start in 4 or even 3, because you mention his comprehension is behind.

My 4th grade, soon to be 10 year old son will use Bigger without extensions. I have poured over the placement chart and I feel that's where he should be. If later I feel we need to add extensions then I'll do so but at the moment it looks pretty full for my Ethan without

Thanks for the response ladies. I was actually thinking about switching his R and S to level 3 or 4. He has never used R and S before and he is frustrated with level 5 review.

Frustration is a good indicator to drop back a little-remember HOD recommends finishing Rod & Staff English 6 by the end of grade 8 because it gets very advanced from level 4 and up, so your ds will not be "behind" if you drop back a level or two.
