HS question: Incorporating the beef-ups

Post by deltagal » Fri May 04, 2012 10:51 am

Hi all,

As our wonderful Freshman year draws to a close, I'm profoundly aware that my ds has done great keeping on track with what's in the guide, but not the "beef-ups". Those of you who have beefed-up for high school, how did you plan/organize/incorporate this extra reading and writing into your child's schedule? :D

As we start high school in 3 months, I'm interested in the responses you get.

This year, I just wrote the word "extension" on the page below the independent history box to remind him to read them, but I'm thinking high school is going to have more to keep track of.

I've been thinking about this, too, and I have my idea in mind, but don't have it ready yet or I'd post a picture. Currently what I do is make a check-off sheet with each subject that she needs to do daily and then laminate it. I do this with all of my kids. Then I hung the laminated subject check-off sheets on hooks on my kitchen wall. They put a check on each subject with their dry erase marker as they complete it and then I can just glance at the wall during the day to see where each kid is in their work.
For my oldest dd's freshman year, I plan on doing the same thing, but adding in her extras (like Govt.) with the day of the week I want her to do that subject (example Govt. M/W/F) and then she will remember what days she is supposed to do that subject and check it off as it is accomplished.
This system has worked very well for us so far and I hope it continues on into our HS years! I'll post pics of my check-off sheets when I get a chance.
I'm so excited to be doing high school with some of you ladies and sharing ideas!!

I have been thinking about this too. Here is my plan. I am going to buy one of the four-year planners from Well-Planned Day. I hope that is OK to say. There is a place I can write in her extras for the week. Then she can just check those off as well as the manual. I will just have her write in what day of HOD she did. I thought about just writing the extra assignment in the HOD manual, but I think this will work better for her and be a better record for us. Either way would work and keep her on track (or at least that is the plan!).

This is similar to what I do. Ours is a Word Document and we just print one out each day. It has the subjects listed down the side and my kids' names across the top (one sheet for everybody). In addition to their HOD subjects (Storytime, dictation, R&S, Independent History Study, ect), I list anything else that I want done every day (Extension history reading, typing practice for my 5th and 6th graders, Awana verses, Spanish for my 9th grader, even shower, clean room, and chore are listed.) Then they color in the box as they complete each thing. School is over when your column is completely colored in. My kids like to be able to see how much they've gotten done so far, and I can look at it periodically and see if we need to get moving (too much visiting).

Where are in our second year of using beef ups. I just made an Excel spreadsheet at the beginning of the year breaking down the reading week by week and then assigning days for her to read but let her decide how much each day. I think at this age they really should be able to figure out how much to read each day to get it done in a week. I used the DW Cds table of contents and the guide book to help me approximate a match up. Did not take tons of effort and it worked great for us. :D On that spread sheet I have decided along the way where she might have to write a paper or a narration. We have not found it to be a huge deal. The program still flows really well. :D

Here are some of the things from Rev2Rev. I have some other things I coordinated but just sticking to the things Carrie recommends on the board, here are some things we coordinated by week. We used The Federalist Papers in Modern Language for our reading of certain Federalist papers. If you have an avid reader we have also found Original Intent and America The Last Best Hope vol 1 went really well with the program. For the Spiritual lives of Composers and Gift of Music I matched them up by composer and added a CD to listen to some of the works of the composers. It is not done by page number and I think some people my find my organization fo that confusing so I am not going to post it. But that is what I did and you will see it is very easy. :D

Isn't "The Signers" already scheduled in the guide?

We do similar to what some of the above posters have written. I go through the HOD manual and write in our extra history reading (we're using Abeka World History 10 as a supplement) when it fits in with the HOD history readings. I also write in French 3-4x/wk. (usually M/W/F), and the Extension book titles (which we use in the Storytime box, instead of the basic package). Other subjects usually are done on the Friday that we don't have HOD scheduled (i.e. the Abeka high school literature, high school-level Health--required in our state, extra supplemental math, high-school level Bible, and French).

So if we are going to use MTMM for our first year of high school, do I need to just do the Extension books with my dd and not the Basic History reading also?

Thanks,

Yes, Charlene--the Basic set is optional for high school. You can add it if you or your child need or want more reading, but it is not required.

Thank you all for your great responses. I've always created a check-list for the week for my dc, which works well. However, I did not incorporate the "beef-ups" into this year's weekly check-lists and thought my ds would work them in. It didn't happen! I'm realizing now I should have given more thought to a "plan" in advance. It's just that a plan requires...."planning." I'm realizing that in order for our next year of HS to be successful I need to go ahead and get all the books that are part of the "beef-up" plan and work on a schedule for the year. My ds really got off track with his overall schedule and we're 11 weeks behind with a REAL longing to stop for the summer. So, I've got 2 projects on my mind - figure out how to get the "beef-ups" for this year completed AND begin to plan next year.
