Singapore Math?

Post by John'smom » Fri Mar 15, 2013 8:29 pm

So my dd has been using Singapore for a little while. She did 1B through last summer, and finished 2A so far this year and will finish 2B at the end of this year. I have a few questions.

Why did HOD choose the Primary edition rather than the Standards?

I know that the HIG isn't recommended. Why is this? My dd loves all the activities that Carrie has planned out. I think they help her too. The HIG contains such activities, right? I've heard though that the Standards HIG is much better than the one for Primary edition.

So is the HIG really not necessary? My dd's hardest subject is math. Even with the current hands on activities, I have had to supplement with MM to really get things to sink in for dd. So knowing that, what is your suggestion?

This doesn't answer all your questions, but here's a little bit on the Home Instructor's Guides from Carrie...

I enjoy the HIG from about 3b on up. I do not use it to teach from. But, if I need more help then I refer to it. There have been a couple of times I was stumped at how to start teaching a certain concept. I really like using it to check work with in the upper levels. Every problem is worked out in it. When its been a while since you have done some of the math it's a nice help to see how to arrive at a answer. :D

Here are two short responses from Carrie regarding why she uses the U.S. Edition:

I guess the only question that I have unanswered is will Singapore continue to work well for my dd without the hands on activities? She will start 3a next year, not what people would consider mathy at all. Is the textbook basically what takes the place of the hands on activities once you start 3A? Has this been successful for kiddos who aren't mathy/struggle with Math?
