Beyond - Resources and Ideas?

Post by mercymom » Sun Jul 03, 2011 7:45 pm

We are using Beyond this fall. I'm having fun choosing our read alouds and
getting ready to order what I need. I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations
of other good resources or things they enjoyed using with Beyond?

A US states puzzle? A good map? Anything you used and enjoyed having with
Beyond?

Also, this is just a fun thing, but I have a Playmobil covered wagon with a
family and everything that I had when I was little. I'm going to give it to my
girls this fall. :)

Let's hear your fun ideas!

depending on where you are, field trips. We went to Williamsburg and Kittyhawk, but if you are farther northeast you could go to Plymouth, Boston, Philadelphia, etc. If you aren't near enough to do actual field trips, you could do virtual field trips online.

Although it's not necessary I found a good atlas/map to be helpful. Or a globe. Also, take some time to plan your spelling. What works for me is to write the words on index cards, wrap an elastic around each unit's words and toss them in a small box. Have fun with Beyond and I highly recommend Mr. Popper's Penguins and The Trumpet of the Swan for read-alouds. :D

We're starting Beyond here, too, on the 18th of this month. This is our first year with HoD and, just from looking through all the books, I can't wait to get started! Glad to see there's a good group of us starting up with Beyond around the same time!

I always find neat little things in Target's dollar section each year. Sometimes they have interesting flash cards which can be fun, my favorite was the insects cards. We got a little board book on the USA there one year and Mini globes on stands for each kid's desk one year. If you have a Target nearby, keep an eye out on the dollar section, you never know what you will find there.
