CTC or RTR- HELP!

Post by yaya » Fri Jul 30, 2010 12:57 am

Hello All,

This year will be our first time with HOD and I am so excited to get started, but I am not sure where to place my 9th grader. I have been feeling that I really want to start with CTC since (in my mind) this would give him a better overview and I kinda like starting at the beginning. I starting buying little by little, books here and there, but now I don't know if this is smart. I haven't purchased the TM, but I was very close to that today and then I began doubting what my plan. Is CTC too easy of a level for him? Assuming that next year there is a high school guide/level released, then he would really be 'behind' and I can see me kicking myself, but CTC sounds and looks sooo rich and good. I just don't know what to do!! uuugh

Here is what our year will look like:

18 yo ds/ 12 grade - extended high school doing debate, speech, Saxon math, ASL, etc.,
15 yo ds/9th grade- ???? speech, ASL, co-op, MUS
12 yo ds/6th grade: Preparing with ext., ASL, co-op, MUS
6 yo ds/K: LHFHG MUS, piano
4 yo ds/PK: LHTH

I really need help figuring this out bc I cannot spend one more penny until I know for sure it is going to be used THIS year.

TIA,
Sonya

The only high school guide that Carrie has committed to is the geography guide that is coming out in 3 years. She is going to finish the next to guides after RTR first. I don't know if that helps with the decision or not.

I just wanted to tell youu what i am doing... i have decided to start my 9th grader in ctc, since it seems like that would be at the beginning of the 4 year history cycle, and since there is not yet an hod guide for highschool my plan is to start with ctc and then do rtr then the next two guides that are going to be released to finish him off. The post at the top of the board page has a lot of good info on how to make it highschool worthy. i dont have time right now, but if you want me too i could tell you exactly what we are going to do later. But i have also seen some people here that are doing rtr for 9th, i think it is because they had already done ctc the previous year (i might be wrong though) :D good luck!

The other posters already mentioned that there is a forum topic (at the top of the Main Board) that has the information for "beefing up" the guides for high school, but I just wanted to add that we're using CTC this year for our 8th grader, and planning RTR for 9th, so I think you would be fine using CTC and going through the 4-year history cycle for high school, just adding to it as needed to make it high-school level. (Carrie already has provided a lot of this in the "Extension Packages", too!!)

Hope this helps!! :)

Just finished CTC and I think especially with the beef up advice it is really plenty for 9th grade. I also thought I would share my plans. I plan on using the RTR and future guides after that for high school along with Carries advice for beefing up those guides. We just love HOD so much and I have seen how easy it is to adjust to a higher level if needed. I found in all my searching I was trying to tweak other things to be HOD and it was just not going to happen. I would have no problem making CTC the place I started on that. If I was in that place I would start with CTC do RTR and then take what Carrie recommends and is thinking will be in the Geography program and spread that into one or both of the last two American programs or wherever you think is best for your child. That is my thought anyway. It's not quite the way HOD is written as far as age levels but there is so much there and Carrie always has such good recommendations on add ons that I feel like for our family it will really work.

Good to see you here Sonya and praying you find peace with your decision. :D

Thanks Ladies! I did read the sticky post. As a matter of fact I think I might have been the OP on that one? Anyhow, I think I will stick to my guns and follow my heart-CTC for 9th. I do plan on doing both the ext and add ons, so I pray it will be enough. I can always add more if it is a bit lite.

Thanks and blessings. I can't wait to order!!

So glad to hear that you've reached a decision your happy with! You won't be disappointed. We are doing CTC this year, too. I was so impressed when I received the books. I spent HOURS looking everything over and devouring a few books myself! It's going to be a great year full of rich learning experiences!

Blessings as you prepare for the coming school year! :D
