Back to weekly reviews! I enjoyed reading about your son's first week Lynn. It is so encouraging to me that your son and so many of the kids doing HOD say they love school. It seems so many others don't like it for one reason or another, even when they are homeschooled.

A, my oldest, finished unit 25 of Bigger Hearts. The science experiments this week were a highlight for us. A Pioneer Sampler talked about fishing, so we did two experiments with water. One where you taped an aluminum foil fish in the bottom of a bowl, then she stepped back until she couldn't see it, then I poured water in the bowl and voila, she could see it again. That was an awesome way to demonstrate refraction of light through water! She really got it, though I did do one other demonstration that I had learned just to cement the idea. The second one was how fish hear so well in water (because when they were fishing or catching the fish they had to be very quiet and still). I put water in a baggie, first I held the baggie near her ear and tapped on it and she heard that, but then I put it right on her ear and tapped it and it was much louder. Sound travels better in water than air. Also one of the stories this week was about Kit Carson being trapped in a tree and beating two bears on the nose so they wouldn't eat him. We made bear masks (I had 3 of my kids in on this one). The only lament is they have worn them so much the straps to hold them on keep coming off.

O, my 2nd born, finished LHFHG this week. We loved the Rhyme, "Zippedy do dah." We had fun doing that each day. There were some great activities in the end too, so many of them have been great but I have to say that school all around has been a pure joy for us this week. I enjoy when I actually have the time to work with the kids and help them finish it well. Sometimes life gets us so busy we don't have as much time to enjoy that. And sometimes both the kids and I get in a mode where we just want to get done so we "shortcut." May I have more of the attitude of enjoying and growing with my kids this year.

G, my 3rd, also did 3 days of LHTH (unit 12). She learned the letter J and "jumped for joy" with Hannah and Samuel. I have gone back to reading the Bible stories from the NIV Bible instead of the Children's Bible. I may use the Children's Bible for pictures. But I would like to push her in listening and comprehension since she is 4 now and I think she is able to. I started LHTH when she was just barely 3 and I wanted the Children's Bible but now I think the stories are too short and simple.

My youngest slept in late all week this week. We stayed up later in the evening and he has started sleeping all the way through the night. So when I nurse him first thing in the morning, he is good for another 3 hours of sleep after that. Wow! It is amazing how much more easily school gets done when he does this. I have optimistically created a new schedule with him sleeping later and we will see how it goes.

Thanks HOD for another great week!

This week, in order to prepare for some time off that's scheduled coming up, we did extra work.

In Bigger Hearts my ds finished unit 30 and did all of 31 (except the timeline). He is enjoying his study of the Wright Brothers.
His favorite thing this week was making and testing paper airplanes... except he got elaborate and made one out of paper and craft sticks!
It looked really good and I am proud of him. :D

In LHFHG my ds did finished unit 21, and did all of unit 22. We were learning about the Reformation. He especially loved the castle building. He played with that several times, and we still have the boxes. He said it is his 'castle church'. My favorite thing this week, was after doing 2 days worth of school in one hour he said
"I LOVE school!"

My youngest didn't get to do her Little Hands this week due to all the excitement of extra school for the boys, and things going on out-of-town. We missed it, and will try to find some way to keep her doing some 'school'.

We survived our first week! I was a little nervous to separate the boys into their own guides, but it went way better than I expected :)

I so love seeing what everyone is doing in their HOD journey! I didn't post as much as I would have liked to last year when we were doing LHTH, I hope to do more this year.
