We finished up Preparing Unit 28 this week. I can't believe how time has flown by. I am super excited about the upcoming homeschool convention in Cincinnati. We'll get to see the Austins and Julie as well as lay my hands on all our books for next year.

I have no photos, but thought I would share my dc's written narration. Maybe it'll help people see how a child's narration could differ from another's.

Ds (age ten)
Cortes came from Spain to capture Mexico, the land of the Aztecs. The Aztecs' cities had houses, temples, and aqueducts, but they worshiped idols and sacrificed humans to them. Cortes burned up his ship so his men couldn't desert him. His horses and cannons scared the Aztecs, and when Chief Montezuma refused to convert, he took him prisoner. Soon Montezuma was killed and the Spanish won the war.

Dd (age eight)
When Cortes was alive, he came to Mexico to take it over. He burnt his ships so his men could not go back to Spain. The Aztec tribe was scared of Cortes' horses and cannons. Chief Montezuma treated Cortes like a guest but when he would not convert, Cortes captured him and killed him. The Aztecs fought and fought but Cortes took over Mexico.

I already posted my dc's poetry from their Creative Writing box this week on the main board, but I will copy and paste here, so anyone in the future can find it next to this same week of Preparing. They had to choose an animal, make an outline of how it grows, and then write a poem or several paragraphs to describe it in an interesting way. They both chose a poem and most the time do. To be honest, I would choose a paragraph, as I always had a hard time writing poetry. My dc on the other hand look forward to writing poems. They are totally different too in the way that they learn so this surprises me on some level, so I'll I can say is that HOD has given them a love and understanding of poetry that I never got in school.

Ds (age Ten)
Butterfly Babies

Tiny eggs lay on a leaf
As white as snow;
They will break out of the egg
And soon will grow.

The baby caterpillars
Will eat and eat;
They move very, very slow
On their small feet.

In a cocoon they will sleep
And pop right out;
The beautiful butterfly
Will fly about.

Dd (age Eight)
Frog Babies

On pleasant summer days,
I go to the pond to gaze,
Upon the mother frog.

I watch her lay her eggs,
Soon they hatch and grow their legs.
The tadpoles are so nice.

Their tail becomes their body.
Soon they hope away with glee,
And have their own babies.

What I am really happy about is that both of them really took time to make sure that their rhyme and rhythm patterns match throughout.

In Beyond Unit 32

This week we finished Folk Tale genre and ds made a puppet of his character. We read Johnny Appleseed and he chose to make a puppet. :D
We had so much fun making this puppet. He had his own ideas to get this finish this fun project and I helped him to get them finalized :D

I had a better picture of the finished product, but think it is on my phone too involved to get it on here... :(

His other project he enjoyed much this week as we are nearing the end of the Beyond guide was to make the craft that shows how God holds the world in His hands. :D

In unit 22 of LHFHG Dd learned how Prince Frederick hid Martin Luther and for the dramatic play we made a castle. She had very special wishes for her castle and did a great job cutting and pasting. She needed help with the 4 towers.

In math she is learning to tell time and she picked it up really quick. :D We love the hands on activities Carrie has in the manuals and she wanted to play this one over and over and over! I ended up recording her doing the coo-coo once she had the time I gave her set. :D

Dd has started to read The Beginners Bible for Emergent Readers and has been able to answer most questions without any difficulty.
We finished ARFH K last year and in January she started on book A, but we are taking it slower. She started writing very young and loves to write notes, so I wanted her to go through the whole alphabet to have proper letter formation.

We did not have pictures doing CTC this week, since ds had some entries in the art and craft building for 4-H. He had a short week as we spread the unit out over the last 2 weeks. Ds is making progress in his written narration and also diagramming his sentences. In math he has been doing excellent with fractions :D
No pictures of him this week :(
As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God. Psalm 42:1
ds 12, Rev to Rev-fall
dd 10, RTR-fall
In year 1 of homeschooling it all started with LHTH for us.
