Here's our update. We have also managed to start LHTH with John, and are on Unit 2, about Noah building the ark. We are doing a LHTH playdate once a week with our friend Joshua, but I don't have any pictures. One thing at a time. :) I got my blog done, check check! Yea! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Revival to Revolution:
"Florence Nightingale" has been such a great read for Wyatt in Storytime! He has been loving reading it each day. I've thoroughly enjoyed hearing his oral narrations about this amazing lady as well. There is much to be learned from those who have gone through difficult times, walking with the Lord by their side, and accomplishing great things! This book has been inspirational. Likewise, reading the stories of "The Signers" and what they went through, gave up, and sacrificed for our country is incredible. I love the cards Wyatt is making for the signers. Their portraits, signatures, and bio info are so neat to read on the cards, and I enjoy reading Wyatt's notes and what he chose to write about each of them from his readings in "The Signers" book. He has such a new understanding and appreciation for these American heroes now...
Image

Speaking of American heroes, it has been incredible to read about the Underground Railroad. Wyatt's respect and compassion for those who lived through this part of history and triumphed against all odds began back in HOD when he first read "Freedom Train" about Harriet Tubman back in BHFHG. It's continued through the years with various books and history readings. "Amos Fortune, Free Man" was yet another amazing book that Wyatt read at the start of this year in RevtoRev, and that he has reread since at least several times. Now he is reading "Hearts and Hands", and his oral narration of the meeting of Sojourner Truth and Harriet Beecher Stowe was so moving. I can't wait for him to read "Gabriel's Horses" and "George Washington Carver" later this year in RevtoRev. I know he will love them. I am so thankful for the way my ds is learning history in HOD. The people he meets in HOD's history are amazing; they are incredibly memorable, and they strike a chord in his heart. Such a better way of learning history than I had in ps. What is not to love about HOD's history! It is impossible not to retain history in this manner. It makes an incredible impact on the heart and mind.

Wyatt is enjoying putting together his history project, which involves cutting out various shapes to make a quilt like those used to give messages for the Underground Railroad. The picture of it in the History Notebook was lovely, and so helpful as he makes his quilt. He will assemble it next week, but here he is cutting his shapes for his quilt...
Image

Here is the section of Wyatt's history notebook that includes his written narration of his history reading, and the copywork of an excerpt from his primary document...
Image

Wyatt's Map Trek Maps continue to be an excellent resource for understanding the geography of the history he is reading about. Each of the maps matches perfectly to what he is reading, and he enjoys seeing his maps come together. Again, such a better way to learn about history mapping than what I did! I remember memorizing facts instead, and of course, I have quickly forgotten them after receiving the "A" on the tests. Wyatt is remembering so much of what he learns from year to year with HOD. It truly is like seeing a mental portfolio of history in the making. He is connecting more and more from year to year, and it is sticking. I think it is because it is all inter-related, and the living books truly make the events and the people come to life in Wyatt's mind...
Image Image

The Inventor Study History Notebook is so neat. I like how an inventor's life is told within the pages of Wyatt's own written narrations and timeline he wrote himself. The pictures and portraits further bring these inventors to life. Just the other day, Wyatt and my dh had to move a container that weighed about 1000 lbs. My dh used a long large wooden timber as a lever to prop up the container and put a wheeled mover under it. He then angled a board into a trailer to use as a ramp, and after wheeling the container over to the trailer, he and Wyatt used 2 timbers to lever it in. Wyatt was talking about inventors and science concepts like levers, fulcrums, ramps, etc., and my dh was impressed. My dh is quite knowledgeable about how to use these concepts in solving day to day problems, and he enjoyed Wyatt being able to apply the science terms to it as they worked. Wyatt sees scientists as problem solvers and incredibly intelligent "out of the box" thinkers. He is right! :D

This week in our Bible Worldview Study, we read a story about 2 families planting crops and placing their faith in different things for their crops to grow. One family prayed to God for provision, and another family prayed to their ancestors/wore beaded necklaces for luck/and placed lava stones in the corner of each field to help their crops grow. When the 2 fathers of these different families talked, they shared their different views. Their dc then had a talk about it as well. The talk was short, but the Christian family had an opportunity to share their belief in one living God, and it made an impact on the son of the other family. Following the format of HOD's plans, Wyatt and I each put a sticky tab on the sections we wanted to talk about with one another and had an awesome discussion! :D My parents just went to a week-long Christian quartet concert and told the story of how they were walking into their hotel laughing together and full of the joy of the Lord when a man stopped them and said, "May I ask you a question?" They told him, "Sure!" He asked, "Why are you so happy?" in a very serious tone. My Dad said, "Well... we're Christians, and we have the joy of God right here in our hearts! I guess we are just happy and content because of it." The man paused and said, "I have inner peace too, because I am a Hindu." This conversation so mimicked the conversation the 2 families in our Worldview study that the tie-in was evident. I LOVE this about our Bible times in HOD. They parallel real life, and give such precious opportunities to share with our dc in real ways that make such a difference in their lives. We had a great talk about how many different ways Papa could have responded to that question, "Why are you so happy?" For example, "We saw a good concert", "We're from IA, and we're vacationing in FL - it's so nice and warm here", "We just ate a good meal at a restaurant", etc. But, my Dad responded with the more significant, timeless answer of why he is happy, and maybe that will make an eternal difference in this man's life someday. I believe God uses all moments like these in His amazing plan.

What a week steeped in deep learning - hope you had a good one too! :D

Julie

Preparing Hearts for His Glory:
Happy Valentine's week - a little belatedly! :D We sent this as a card to the grandparents, and I thought we'd wish you HOD ladies a "Happy Valentine's Day" this way too! :D
Image

We continue to enjoy our time in PHFHG each day. I have said it before but I'll say it again - we LOVE "Grandpa's Box"! If I could whittle, I'd set to whittling each and every one of those special figures Grandpa talks about - what a neat way to share the Biblical story of redemption. Riley narrates well from "Grandpa's Box" - it is an excellent book to narrate from. It begs to be retold. Riley is also improving his written narrations each week. He is learning to choose what is most important, while still interjecting personality into it. There are always many exclamation points in Riley's written narrations. He is a "live out loud" kind of guy! :D
Image

Riley's history research was on the ichthus this week. It partnered so well with his history project. He made a fish out of cinnamon and applesauce, and then wrote the fishers of men verses on the back of it. He chose to give it to his cousin Beau for his birthday. I love that the history projects are not only relevant to history, they are often faith building as well...
Image Image

We are on the tail end of our DITHOR Folk Tales genre, and in the midst of planning our final project. The boys both chose to role play a part from their books, and they are super excited to do so! One is from the part in "Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince" where the son is reunited with his father, the king, and proves he has grown into a man of honor. This is from Wyatt's book. The other role play is from Riley's book, Buffalo Bill. He chose the shoot 'em up part of the book between Buffalo Bill and an Indian raiding party. Everyone is involved, and they are having great fun practicing their parts and dressing up. Even little Emmett has a few lines "Halt! Where is Terry?" is one of them. "Quick! Get over the river!" is another. He is quite a good little actor already - very full of vigor! We act it out next week - can't wait to do it! :D
Image

Riley is really moving along in dictation. He began Level 4, and he hardly ever makes a mistake. It is neat to see how dictation has worked so well for both of my older sons - one who is good at spelling, and one who struggled. Likewise, math is moving along nicely. Riley now can do long division and large number multiplication with ease. He knows his facts very well now. I am happy it is clicking! After years of tutoring dc in math, it is such a blessing that Singapore teaches math in such a way that the facts stick, and that mental math works. What a relief! :D

Riley is a week away from being 9 yo, so I let him begin to read his Reading about History books. He loves it! I am still reading the Storytime books, and often around 10 minutes of his Reading about History, but I have noticed an improvement in his narrating ability. I can see CM's theory at work here that once dc are 9 yo, they retain what they have read better if they actually read it themselves. That makes sense, as they are reading the words instead of just listening to someone else reading. :D Anyway, another good week! HOORAY!

In Christ,
Julie

Little Hearts for His Glory:
Emmett is now writing his name quite neatly, and strengthening those fine motor skills each day. The R & S Workbooks are perfect for him. They are short, varied, and fun, and they teach a myriad of skills. He continues to use his Ticonderoga pencils with grippers, and this pencil grip is forming nicely. He often gets to cut and glue things as well - always of favorite of his. If I'm not careful, and entire bottle of glue can be used in no time - Emmett has one theory - the more glue, the better.
Image Image Image

We are having fun learning about shapes, sides, corners, and attributes this week. Emmett first traced a dotted circle, triangle, square, and rectangle, and then he drew his own next to them...
Image

Next, Wyatt and he had fun searching for these shapes throughout the house. I sometimes have Wyatt do one of his more active activities with Emmett for their play time, as they do it up BIG and enjoy it together! I always let Wyatt read it and see if they'd enjoy it together for their playtime - the answer is usually, "Oh yeah! Emmett would LOVE this one!" :D

On another day of math we sorted objects according to attributes. This was such a good activity! We had 2 papers on the floor to sort things onto. The first attribute to search for was, everything blue should be sorted and grouped on the red paper; everything else on the white...
ImageImage

Everything round/circular on the red paper; all the rest on the white...
Image

Everything you can write with on the white, all the rest on the red...
Image

Everything with black on it on the white, all the rest on the red...
Image

Emmett continues to have more and more questions about God. He often mentions Him throughout the day - "God made that bird at the bird feeder, Mom!" or "God is everywhere - EVERYWHERE - Mom!" or "People shouldn't say bad words. God doesn't like that!" or "How could God make us out of nothing?" Such amazing talks we have even at a young age within HOD. I am so thankful to homeschool with HOD. I am enjoying teaching each of our dc. I hope you all had a terrific week! :D

LHFHG.Week 5.
How time flies! we are on week 5 and each day is a breeze, its wonderful.
Stanley continues to work through the reading lesson.I noticed that he can now 'hear ' rhyming' words.Im trying to move slowly the TRL,because Stanley has been sight reading a few words for year or so..and I want him to hear the sounds ,not just memorise some words. He is desperate to push on nd colour the next page.
This week we have been learning about Moses and here he is learning about the mistake Aaron made whilst Moses was up the mountain.

Bigger week 12
Nathan has struggled with writing and sequencing ,but I am seeing progress.
Image

Nathan has been really enjoying learning about John Audubon .I think JA sounds quirky like Nathan .He is really enjoying the science in Bigger.

Image
We have seen really big progress in his reading too and he is reading Keys to the Treasure ,so I think he is ready for DITHOR ,as soon as we have finished this.He has zooming through his maths. It amazes me .He struggled so much to learn the addition/subtraction number facts, yet he has found multiplication and division fairly easy.
Singing,is our next challenge. He has never sung. Never in church, never nursery rhymes or songs he likes .Up till now I have been letting him listen and read along, understnding this singing is so alien to him[ why sing when you can speak? what is its purpose?].
I actually felt this week that this was holding him back now,and if we dont really push him -his fear and his misunderstanding will always hold him. I explained God want s us to worship him,and he loves God so he was eager .Ive not heard him sing yet -I have told him that he can mouth the words and have no sound come out.Its stranger still to have little Stanley singing Amazing Grace , I 've grown used to songless home .Its going to be a long process.
