Did no-one do school this week? I meant to check in right after starting the thread but got busy and then left on a date with DH [we saw Courageous - if you go to see it, TAKE TISSUES!!). I'm surprised a toddler didn't post for me since I saw evidence of someone who can't type but likes pressing buttons having been at my laptop in my absence. :P

So .. I put off starting this week until 101 Favorite Stories from the Bible came in. I wish I'd had this from the beginning! It's delightful! We couldn't wait on the schedule for emergent readers as DS was anxious to dive into Owl at Home and he's having a ball. The choice of these books is just genius. I had no idea they were so interesting until DS got a hold of them and started eagerly asking permission to read! How can a mother resist?! Meanwhile, I've dropped spelling list 1 due to time concerns. I tried a new schedule this week and it's going as blissfully as a schedule can go with a 4yo, 2yo and 1yo. School is getting done and DS is actually enjoying it - it's not too bad to have taken until Unit 9 (and 12 weeks  ) to have found our stride, is it? I <3 LHFHG. I was talking with DH on our date about what it's helping ME learn as a teacher. I'm having a great first year.

Due to the short week I don't actually have much to check-in with .. I was really just hoping to read what y'all have been up to. So .... stories? pictures? Someone DID do school, right? :D

We just finished week two for my ds 8 (BHFHG) and dd5 (LHFHG) and week five for ds4 (LHTH) We switched from one curriculum to HOD for the older that's why there is a difference in weeks. Anyway, my DS8 just finished up his History on Columbus and Cabot and added to his map of their routes. He is finishing up his second biography for DITHOR. He read a bio on George Washington last week and this week it's Abe Lincoln. Science we are still working on the seashore and discovered today that Salt water is more dense than pure water. I made a "test" from all key points in History and Science to check his understanding. (Hubbie wanted it, he is still a little nervous about them actually understanding and "getting it" since this is our first year homeschooling) My ds8 is really enjoying HOD and being home. We are having to stop about every page in History to do summarizing/narration. But, we are working on it. He seems very happy learning now.
DD5 is learning bible verses very easily and enjoys science and math. She still is struggling with listening during History and we are meeting some bumps in the road with reading. But, I'm praying it gets better. In Science she got to make a boat out of foil and see if it would float like Noah's ark. She added a whole box of dry pasta to the boat and it still didn't sink. She really enjoyed that.
My ds4 just finished review week for letters A,B,C,and D. He is struggling with C some which is to be expected, I think. He comprehends the bible activities and reading well. And we just began to do a preschool "getting ready" for handwriting book. He is loving have a workbook like the big kids. He really enjoyed using glue to make the letters this week and then sprinkling them with cinnamon. His paper smelled very yummy!
We had a pretty good week, DD is getting used to actually having "work" and not just playing. But, I think she will come around. Hope everyone else had a wonderful, blessed week!

We completed Unit 8 of CTC. I have one picture from the project in Unit 7...the ephod breastplate that was pretty fun. I used air-dry clay, but I knew it would be heavy. I keep forgetting to buy regular toothpaste to make clay with because gel doesn't work. But we just glued it on cardstock and it turned out okay.

DD is doing exceedingly well on starting her Bible Quiet time. She just loves the Ancient book, and really I'm surprised because it seems a bit difficult. But she doesn't appear to have issues with it. I think she was working on her written history narration as she usually pre-writes it on a white sheet before putting it into her notebook. But I do know she was working on school work.

The History Project of the Ark of the Covenant and the sea parting was pretty fun and she wanted to play with it afterward.

And mapping out her "Map It" from Zoology 3. I love this map from Officemax, because it's a write and wipe and sort of a big peal and stick map; like a big post-it note.

This is my first weekly check-in even though we are in week 4 of Beyond with my DD 7 and week 2 of LHTH. I don't have any pictures but just wanted to say, we are loving it! This is our first year homeschooling and it could not have begun any smoother! We are all having fun and learning!! Thank you HOD!!

In Beyond we have loved all the hands-on math activities. I really thought Singapore 1A was going to be too easy but she is having fun and I can really see it cementing the fundamentals in her brain! She has loved all the books, we just got done with Squanto for our story time. I love this time period in history! She is doing great reading aloud the ER books. Her reading level is higher than these but she didn't want to read aloud and sometimes the questions afterwards she has a hard time with so I'm really glad we went with the ER. They are definitely teaching her narration and to think about the books!! Poetry copywork is the hardest part for her as I thought it would be, but she has finished the poem every week and is doing great! I can see an improvement in just this first month!

I wasn't going to start LHTH with DS 3 (4 in Nov) but after 2 weeks of school I decided to do LHTH just 1/2 speed with him to give us some time together and it's going really well! He loves the fingerplays and bible stories! He's a very smart boy, can recognize ABC's, numbers etc . . . but he never wants to color, or write in any way. So the LHTH activities are just enough to get him moving that direction! He can now write his name on our big white board all by himself! A lot of his motivation I think comes from seeing his big sis doing school, he's now decided it is OK!! :)

We are feeling very blessed by HOD!!

I still am amazed at how much you learn in one week. We just finish week 4 in BIGGER. Here is our post.

We had a rough week, as all three of my girls were sick. :( But we are making steady forward progress. Still half-speed this week, and likely next.
