Just keep going with it. We started Bigger 4 days a week in October, went half speed for maybe 7 units and we are now in unit 12. I will set it aside at the end of May and pick it back up again in August.
You absolutely can move her up a grade level.

Re: Boys and Girls of Colonial Days
I had an older copy of that book and so my page numbers didn't match, either. What I had to do was look at the key idea to figure out which chapter we were in. Usually the readings were half of a chapter.

Re: Teacher manual
You would do the same activity for science, I'm not positive about the math. If I remember correctly the page numbers for the grade 1 science text are in the back of the manual and there is also a schedule for the grade 1 math book.

Re: Beyond, and "Indians" (First Nations / Native Peoples)
I just wanted to add that the Eggleston books used in Bigger have quite a lot of Indian references, and I think even "savage" in the beginning chapters about the early settlements in America. I had heard that before, that the words Indian and especially Eskimo are not used in Canada but still accept...

Re: Finishing Bigger Hearts For His Glory
I used to be really caught up in the school year schedule but then I realized that I didn't have to and gave it up. Last year we were cramming it in at the end and went into June to finish up. It was stressful for all of us. It is a big relief now knowing that we don't have a deadline. For both of m...

Just do one lesson a day and you'll come out fine. I honestly never look at the lesson number in the guide and just keep moving through the book.

Re: A Preparing conundrum - the 6YO likes listening to Histo
I have a little listener, too. She listened in to Bigger 2 years ago and now I'm doing Bigger with her. She hasn't said a word about going through it again so it doesn't seem like she remembers at all. I am using different storytime books, though.

We finished Beyond 2 weeks ago and I totally forgot to pull out Bigger until the night before! Fortunately, I had done it with my son so it was easy to get ready.

Re: Running 3 guides but only using 2 sets of story time boo
For your storytime question, since Beyond and Bigger both go by genres, you can just keep the youngers in the same book. I agree with Julie, I don't see how you could do those three guides together in one day. All three of them are teacher-intensive you'd be run ragged.

Re: Switching Science in CTC
We are still in the Zoology 3 book. There are the questions to answer every week and then they work on making a book of animal tracks. The notebooking pages set from HOD only goes with the history readings. Could you replace it with Zoo 1 or 2? I think those would be the closest replacements. I woul...

My daughter actually really enjoys it, so I would go ahead and start it if she's ready. The funny part is that she WANTS to do all the writing.

Re: Math Advice for 3rd Grader
I actually switched from CLE to TT and it's going very well for us. We do supplement with xtramath.org for facts practice. Same as you, math lessons with CLE were taking an hour and it was torture for both of us. It was just *too* spiral as well. I have friends who use Saxon and say they take an hou...

Re: Dictation instructions
Thanks for your kind replies. So if I'm understanding you correctly the word "first" in their instructions for day 1 and the lack of the word "studied" on day 4 doesn't really mean anything? I just follow the dictation instructions and do the same process each day, right? Kara In short, yes, you ar...

Re: Preparing Guide -- Book Idea
Just wanted to say- we came from another curriculum that used The Great Ice Age book. We used it again in PHFHG and there were no complaints. HOD covers and utilizes the books very differently. We have not had a problem with any books in the sets that are a repeat because of the difference in style...

Re: Am I Hindering His Reading?
My understanding is that he needs to read the emerging readers books himself. It does get tiring to read many pages out loud, so maybe you can break up the readings into smaller chunks. I would find a different early reader from the library that you can take turns with.
