Re: Beef up Beyond or have and easy year???
It sounds like he is enjoying Beyond, so I think you should stick with what you're doing. Your plan looks great. It is very common for us hs'ing moms to ask "is it enough?" The workload increases every year, so enjoy the time you have with him now!

Re: Taking books overseas
I personally think you should consider using Bigger Hearts half-speed anyway. Your son is only 5 right now, there's no reason to rush him through school (unless he's highly gifted I guess). The guides are going to get difficult for him pretty quickly. The missionaries I know come back on home assign...

Re: question - repeating guides with younger child?
Yes, you would use all the same books except the storytime selections. I did Little Hearts and Bigger together. My daughter listened in on most of the readings in Bigger, though she was usually playing at the same time so not giving it her full attention. She is halfway through Bigger right now and ...

Re: Dictation/Extension Words
Thank you both for the ideas. I had been wondering about what to do with the mistakes. I didn't know if they should actually correct the mistakes they make on the original writing or just rewrite it. So, in the dictation notebooks, there may be a page with the same passage written several times? :w...

Re: Is it time to uncombine? UPDATE!
Personally, I would just give her time to grow this year. My suggestion would be to just focus on the 3R's for your DD and not worry about anything else. She is still young, so if she loves playing with her younger siblings then I would let her do that. My DD has an amazing imagination and LOVES to ...

The link worked for me. You have to sign up an account with IEW before you can download it, did you try that?

I think what you're doing is fine. I do R&S orally with both of my kids. The only thing we write is the diagramming in the upper levels. Otherwise, I do it just like you said.

We went from MFW Adventures for 2nd into Bigger Hearts for 3rd. It is a great 3rd grade guide. You should not place your child according to the history cycle, but according to their skill level.

Re: Not Learning Letters
I just have to think that after almost 4 years of teaching that there has to be another reason he has not learned his letters. Have you had his eyes checked? I would start there. If that checks out then he may need an evaluation by a reading specialist.

If your DD completed Bigger, then she should be fine to start Preparing. My son used Preparing for "4th" grade, he turned 9 in July before starting.

Re: Self study history vs extension on preparing
Yes, the extension package is NOT a substitute for any other package. It is in addition to them.
The extensions are for older students, not just ones with a higher reading level.
