Re: Question about the dictation that is in Write with the Best
We did not do the dictation in Write With the Best. We skipped that and just did the dictation assigned in CTC guide. HTH!

Re: Question about Historical Readers
Michelle, I'm not Carrie but my understanding is that the historical books from Storytime box are meant to be read-alouds, not readers. The student would then be reading books you select to do DITHOR (such as the Secret Garden, etc.) HTH!

Suggested times for RTR?
Does anyone know if Carrie has put out suggested times for each box in RTR? Thanks!

Re: Help?
Just wanted to add that I did Little Hearts this past year with my then 1st grader, who also fit academically on the Beyond chart. But, as far as listening comprension and interest in the subjects, Little Hearts was such a perfect fit for her, and she grew so much. I do think Little Hearts is a wond...

Re: Dictation help
Not a silly question! :D I break each sentence into phrases. For your example sentences, I would say The father robin (student writes that part) gets food for the baby robins. (student writes that part.) Robins like worms (student writes) and fruit. (student writes) I try to only repeat once if need...

Re: tempera paints
Yes, we have these and they are great! Not as thick as the liquid tempera, but much less mess. They work well for most painting projects (on paper, clay, etc.) but there still might be some instances where you might want a thicker paint. I think they're worth it! HTH!

Re: Little Hearts or Beyond For First Grade
Have you checked the placement chart yet? My dd was placing mostly with Beyond last year for first grade (6yo), but I felt like she needed an overview of what history is before we started American history. (She was not as interested in history as her older sister at that age) So we went with LHFHG w...

Re: CTC Placement questions
This does sound reasonable if that is where they fit on the placement chart, although you might want to wait a few months before adding in LHTH for your little one. It doesn't take much time at all, but I would focus on getting the olders into the "HOD groove" first, just to save you some stress. Ju...

Re: Back from touring the 'other' curriculums...
Nicole, that is exactly why we have chosen not to use SL. They have some really wonderful books, but history from a biblical worldview/timeline is a must for us. If you are choosy about the books you use, you will love the ones HOD has picked! We have used MFW, (and would probably be using it still ...

Re: Is 6th grade too old for Bigger?
Julie, thanks! You make some great points. Obviously, I would have to beef up Bigger quite a bit if we go that route, by adding in the written narration, research, etc. DH thinks its a great idea to combine where I can, and in some ways would simplify things in our homeschool, but I also am leary of...

Is 6th grade too old for Bigger?
As I am making final decisions for our next year, I am having an idea to possibly combine my 2nd grader (7yo) and 6th grader (11yo) into Bigger. We finished LHFHG and CTC this past year, and I have been planning on moving on to Beyond and RTR. However, the idea of combining has always appealed to me...

Re: CTC - Writing Program
Although I just finished CTC with a 5th grader, not a 7th grader, I do think it might be too much to try to do both. Between the writing they do in Rod and Staff, Write with the best, and the written narration, we felt like it was really plenty of writing. I would encourage you to start with CTC the...

Re: How long will I have to do 2 levels at once?
My oldest two are 5th grade and 1st grade. We did CTC and LHFHG this year. And, yes, you will have to do two levels. I used MFW previously and could not wait until my 2nd dd was in 2nd grade to finally be able to combine. However, after a year of HOD and looking at a friends MFW manual, I realized t...

Re: Thoughts on children and guides
Yes, that is correct, and part of the beauty of the HOD guides! :D As the olders are getting more independent and responsible for their own assignments, it frees you up to work with your youngers. I have found this to be the case this year doing CTC and LHFHG. In the fall we start RTR, Beyond and no...
