Preparing- which box to shift to Day 5?
I need to shift some of the work from Preparing to a 5th day, and my son prefers to do the history project over time rather than all at once. That seems to leave the rotating box (vocab, research, geog., timeline) as a good fit for doing all in one day. It looks like more "fun" activities for a Frida...

Re: readers in Preparing
I just recently bought the Preparing Guide. Yes, that is where DITHOR comes in; there are no reading questions in the back of the book. There are many other history/Bible/poetry type discussion questions in those areas of the guide, but none specifically for a reading program, since that is where th...

Re: Do you use a typing program?
We just looked online to buy Typing Instructor for Kids. I think you might be able to just download it, but we ordered it to be mailed to us. My son didn't seem ready for it this year (gr. 3) so we are going to try again next year in gr. 4. But I know my niece was ready at a younger age.

Re: Do you use a typing program?
My ds will be using Typing Instructor for Kids next year. It uses a game format to teach. My niece really enjoyed using it.

3rd grader in Beyond
I may be having a few children from other families join me as I teach for parts of Beyond- for history & history-related subjects, poetry, storytime, and science only. Do you think I need to add anything for the 3rd grader, especially in science? (She will be doing separate math and language arts wi...

Re: Confused over extra packages with PHFHG!!
I just bought the PHFHG guide, and yes, you would want to order the deluxe package as well for your 3rd grader if you want him to be able to do the Independent History Study boxes (making for a well-rounded program). As far as I understand, the extension package for your 5th grader would be for him ...

Re: foreign language curriculum
We will be using Rosetta Stone Homeschool French. The kids have been reviewing their Indonesian with Rosetta Stone as well (we are missionaries). Rosetta Stone is expensive, but it's worth it to me because it's on the computer, uses native speakers, I don't have to teach it at all, and it's a relati...

Re: DITHOR & 3rd gr. Writing skills
Thanks, Kathleen. I think I will keep to the Student 2/3 book too, then, at least for awhile until he adjusts to the writing level. I guess you just used the 2/3 section of the teaching book then?

Re: Story Time for Beyond
I used the boys set for Beyond a few years ago with 3 boys ages 5, 7, and 8. They loved many of the books (especially Sword in the Tree, Squanto, and The Key to the Treasure), but I did find it difficult to keep their attention with Mountain Born (and sometimes The Cricket in Times Square- you could...

Re: DITHOR & 3rd gr. Writing skills
Thanks for sharing! :) That is good to hear; I think I won't worry too much or it will just put more stress on him. We started dictation midway through the year, and lately I have already noticed some improvements with his spelling that I never saw before. And he doesn't fight dictation at all. (Esp...

DITHOR & 3rd gr. Writing skills
I am not sure if I should be too concerned yet or not about my son's lack of writing skills. :( He is 9 yrs. old and finishing up 3rd grade; getting ready to do Preparing in the fall. When he does DITHOR (level 3), I usually have to assist him so much with the written worksheets, to the point of som...

Canadian HOD users; any plan of action yet?
I've seen a lot of good posts about how to use HOD and also teach our kids about their country (Canada). What I'm curious about is whether those of you who were discussing getting together on this and coming up with a "plan of study" have made any progress in that area? I would love to know what you...
