Re: Best Books for Christian Character
Little Pilgrim's Progress was the first book that came to mind. It is a 5th grade reading level and HOD sells it in the 4/5 book pack for DITHOR. It is a fabulous book for character teaching. The original Pilgrim's Progress would also be good for older students in High school. Sir Malcom and the Mis...

Re: ? about some of the DITHR choices
Carrie has Naya Nuki listed as a non-fiction book for her 4/5 Girl pack. I think it would be just fine for your non-fiction 4/5 choice. My son has loved that book as well and has read it multiple times. I haven't read it, but from what he has ever told me I have, like Carrie, considered it be non-fi...

Re: Preparing & CTC Box Times
Thank you so much Nancy! That post is exactly what I was looking for!
We went from 1/2 speed to full speed mid last week with both guides. It helped to read that it can take a month for the times to reach a stride & even out. Reading an approximate time for each box is very helpful.

Preparing & CTC Box Times
I thought I recently saw times from Carrie or Julie for the boxes in Rev2Rev or RTR.
Does any kind of thread exist with similar time frames for Preparing and CTC and approximately how long Carrie intended for each box to take?
I couldn't find anything doing an advanced search.
Thank you!

Re: Is this a good plan? Beyond vs. Bigger
Hi Kristen, You are getting so much great help that I couldn't give. I have learned more about HOD reading your thread! :D I have hesitated to chime in since we are new to HOD, but we are also in our seventh year of home schooling. Since it seems your placement decision is talking some about writing...

Re: reading fluency vs. comprehension
I am new to HOD as well, but we are in our 7th year of home schooling. I noticed that Carrie has both the Early Reader's Bible and the Beginner Bible in Beyond for emerging readers. I have used both and the Early Readers Bible is easier to read then the Beginner Bible. I would say the Early Reader i...

Re: CTC Written Narrations
I always stick to exactly what the guide says as for length of sentences because I know that Carrie always has a reason for doing things the way she does them. If it is taking him that long to write 8 then I definitely wouldn't encourage him to do more. The skill I think he is learning is to really...

Re: Back to back guides?
I have read that Bigger and Preparing are both intensive teaching years and thus difficult to do at the same time. I have also read posts by a mom on this board currently doing those two guides, as well as an older guide, successfully. We are doing Preparing and CTC right now, but I also just starte...

Re: CTC Written Narrations
If he is just beginning, he will speed up as he goes along, so I would not sweat it. My kids knock them out (after reading) in less than 10 minutes now. Thank you for the encouragement! So they must gain the skill! :D His other curriculum had him do some written narrations, but it was much differen...

CTC Written Narrations
These written narrations are much different then the ones we did with our last curriculum or on our own. I like them, I like the guidance, and they are harder in a good way. I am wondering though how long they should be taking? My ds12 read and answered the questions easily. Those two things took 15...

Re: Crazy to switch curriculum in October???
You aren't crazy to switch if what you are using isn't working for your school this year. We recently switched to HOD. I, like you, was considering waiting a year before taking on the switch. I am so glad I didn't wait! :D My DH and I prayed about it and it was clear to us that it was God's timing f...

Re: 1/3 Rod and Staff English Question
Thank you Gwenny and Nealewill! This was helpful. It sounds a bit like what I have always done. It has depended some on the day, what writing they have done that day, and where they are at in the day. It looks like continuing what I have done will probably work. My example was from ds10 yesterday wh...

CTC ~ Reading About History Box
On the first day of each unit is some history research and research questions in the reading about history box. This past week I went ahead and had my son do the questions orally. Are these questions meant to be written, or is the quick oral fine? I want my children to grow in writing this year so I...
