Re: Beyond Little Hearts in 4 Day??
We've done it both ways. For most of the year, we did a five-day week, unless we had an occasional field trip or wanted to leave a day early for a week-end family vacation. Lately, I've started doing four-day weeks so that I can fit in some art projects that keep getting pushed by the wayside. When ...

Re: Not sure my child is ready for the next program
I looked at the chart. He fits into Bigger. He can read very well He can write manuscript He can copy stuff, he just doesn't like to He's in unit 5 of R&S 2 and doing well with it We do our own math, but he's just about finished grade 2 and almost never makes a mistake I think he *can* do Preparing...

I guess I didn't read very carefully!holyhart wrote:I *think* she meant half milk and half water, not half and half (like the half cream/milk mixture). But I'm not positive.
Oops!
I'll give it another try on Monday. Thanks!

Hmmm ... I used skim. Perhaps that's the problem? I'll try 1/2 and 1/2 and see if that works. Thanks!MomtoJGJE wrote:I had to do half and half milk to water and got colors around the edges.

Beyond Science Experiment - What did I do wrong?
We tried the science experiment for Unit 20, Day 3 today and it didn't work. We followed the directions closely (put a white paper on the wall, shine the flash light on the paper and then put a glass of water with a few drops of milk between the flashlight and paper), but got nothing - no colors, no...

Re: Poetry copywork in Beyond and Bigger
Initally in Beyond-we just read the poem and he suggested the title on day one ,and we worked on him understanding poetry. My son has aspergers and is very literal. Then we worked on him memorising the poem-we cut up the poems and he put them in order, decorating a photocopy .He was writing the weekly...

Re: Poetry Copywork Question #2: How much writing do they need?
I think the copywork is very important. Although it does practice letter formation, there are many other skills that are learned as a child does copywork. Since doing the copywork in Beyond, my ds is much more attentive to detail and is more careful about the mechanics or writing (punctuation, spell...

Kildee House
We recently started reading Kildee House, for the Fantasy genre. All was going well until Mama raccoon was killed. My tender, sensitive boy was devastated and doesn't want to read the book anymore. (I think he gets that from me. To this day I can't read Stone Fox without tears streaming down my face...

Re: Explode the Code or R&S for phonics practice?
We've never used ETC, so I can't speak on that, but we use and absolutely love the R&S Bible & Nurture series. We started our phonics instruction with OPGTR and although it was okay, my son just wasn't progressing the way I desired. When we switched to R&S, he soared. We've completed all of grade 1 ...

Re: Planning for fall...Beyond vs Bigger 1/2 speed
I was in almost exactly your boat last year and oh, how I wavered between Beyond and Bigger. We ended up going with Beyond, even though my ds is very bright and was almost 8 when we started. In the beginning, I still had some doubts, but now that we're about halfway through, I can say with assurance...

Re: LHTH Math
It sounds like your son is not here, yet, from Ethiopia? Do you have any information about his literacy or past learning? The reason I ask is that my niece has adopted four children from Ethiopia. About five years ago she adopted two boys (1 & 4) and at the end of last year, she adopted two girls (a...

Re: A little schedule change, and WOW
I love the idea of having a shorter school day and how HOD is designed to be able to be completed in a few hours. I just wish there were some way I could make that work for us. Unfortunately, we live in "regulation heavy" New York and are required to homeschool for an average of five hours a day at...

Re: Devotional for LHH
Hmmm, my Unit 1, Day 3 of LHTH says this for the Devotional Activity key idea: "Share a devotional focusing on character traits or memory work based on the letter ‘A’." The key idea for the same day's Bible story says: "God made people," which fits with the Bible reading assigned for the day.
