Re: 4 kinds of prayer
I just wanted to comment on this. When I got my recent HOD catalog, I was still on the fence if I wanted to go back to HOD or not. (We had done about 1/2 of a guide last year and did enjoy it, just not sure if it was what we wanted to do.) I saw this prayer subject brought up in one of the samples, ...

Re: Spelling/Dictation question
Thanks gals. I actually loved the HOD method so I have been using it with Spelling Workout. I guess I should look at how different the words are between the two programs and maybe I will just use the HOD list 2...

Spelling/Dictation question
Is there a specific spelling level that kids should be at when they start dictation? We used some HOD this last year for first grade and used the first spelling level in Beyond. For the fall, I actually bought Spelling Workout B. Now I am thinking of going back to HOD, but I want to use the spelling...

I don't know, but I am using OPGTR (Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading) with my daughter so I will have that question here in the near future! Listening to what others say...

Emerging Readers - Nature Reader is long for ds
Hello! We are absolutely loving Beyond! My son is going through the Emerging Reader set and he is reading the CLP Nature Reader. He's on about week 3 or 4 of reading it and each week seems to be a little harder for him. Basically, it's the length. He's skipping easy words, mixing up easy words, and ...

Okay, I'm going to trust you guys on this one! It sure is freeing, I will say that. Spelling (and school) is going so much faster and smoother since starting HOD.

Re: Spelling Question
I haven't determined his learning style just yet. I do know, however, that I am NOT an auditory learner. That might be why I balk at what he's doing. So, that way is okay? We are coming from Spell to Write and Read, which really stresses the WHY behind spelling, so I actually tend to go over why a w...

Spelling Question
So, we've switched to using the HOD method of Spelling with my 1st grader. (Beyond) I don't know if my son is doing it right, though. On Day 1, I give him the card and a sentence, and help him look at it, pointing anything "funny" out. But, then what he does is say - "are, a-r-e, a-r-e, a-r-e, a-r-e...

Kids Dictionary
I was looking at Bigger last night and I was wondering what dictionary would be good to get. We have a regular ol' dictionary, an intermediate dictionary, and a Webster's 1828. While I love the 1828, I think I'd like something a bit more friendly for a second grader. What would you ladies recommend ...

lol, same here!KristinBeth wrote:Still nowhere near us, but maybe next year. I'll keep handing out catalogs to friends in AZ and CA.
I actually feel "free" from going to our state conference this next summer because HOD won't be there and there's nothing else I'm interested in looking at!

Great! I just wanted to make sure that he wasn't supposed to be copying the entire poem everyday or anything like that. Sounds like we are in just the right place! Thank you!

How much copywork?
Ugh, I know I just saw this asked on here. At the time I saw it there were no responses, but now I can't find the thread! My son is in Beyond, and I'd like to know what is the typical number of sentences that other first graders are doing for copywork? If you could let me know or point me to another...
