Re: let's talk about phonics instruction...
Last year, we did exactly what you are looking at doing (we used Reading Made Easy, though). DS just got to the point he couldn't fit anything more into his little head. We stopped for a month and just read Bob Books and other books that he could handle. Then we started up again and he did just fine...

Re: Help with my distractable guy
Thanks Jenn for the nice response. Our guys sound alot alike. You have my sympathy. :D :D :D :D I do let him stand up or sit or lay on the ground. I also let him fiddle with things while I'm reading as long as if I ask him a question he can answer it. If he was my only child, going that long every d...

Help with my distractable guy
Hi Ladies, I don't post out here much, but I check in and see what's going on often. A quick re-introduction. This is our second year of homeschooling our 9th grader and my 1st grade son. We also have a 3 year old who wants to be a part of everything. I had envisioned this year with my 3 yr old sitt...

Re: Review your past year with HOD!
We are finishing up Week 21 of LHFHG. We've had such a great year! We'll go a few more weeks and then break for Summer. We'll finish LHFHG in the Fall and then move into Beyond. We will finish RME before we break! I don't know if some of you remember, but my HUGE worry about teaching reading has bee...

Another idea is the spiral index cards. I wrote all the verses at the beginning of the year and we just flip to the one we are working on for the week.

Re: Old version of American pioneers and patriots
I got this book at Half Price Books really cheap and was so excited! Now, I'm wondering which I have - old or new?? Mine says "copyright 1995, 2002" and the printing was 2007. It has questions at the end of the Unit, but not at the end of each chapter. Is this the right one?

JoyousBlessings, Welcome to the group! I look forward to meeting you more. Just wanted to share some of our experiences with Little Hands last year and now Little Hearts this year. When I began looking for a preschool curriculum for our then 4 year old, I too stumbled upon Heart of Dakota. I had nev...

Finished "Finding the Answers" today!
Just had to share. Andy finished this R&S book today. One of the last activities was thinking of things that were made of wood and metal. I went around the room asking what things were made out of. Just to see what he would say, I asked him, "What is Daddy's head made out of?" Without hesitation, he...

Re: Need More Books for LHFHG...Ideas?
Jodi, It's funny you post this today. I was just figuring out approximately how many days my ds has left in his books. If he continues at his current speed, it is not long (maybe 2-3 weeks). So I was looking for the same thing. I'd second the critical thinking books. My older daughter saw the "Mindb...

Sheila, I know how you feel about a clean house. It drives me batty! It was so much easier to keep the house clean when I worked full-time and the kids were in daycare  Now that everyone is home ALL day they have alot more opportunity to mess it up and I have alot less time to clean it. I have ...

Re: more help about the "missing year"
Hi Julie, I'm one of the moms that was thinking of doing LHFHG over 2 years. My son turns 6 next month. He is a very busy little guy and stands, jumps, bounces, runs around the kitchen thru most of his lessons (just to get idea of what he is like). Before we started it this Fall, I could not imagine...

Re: Teaching calendar skills - days of the week, months, etc
I can't remember the unit in LHTH (and I borrowed my copy out to a friend), but the Days of the week are taught in one of the Rhymes in Motion. My son still uses this rhyme when we talked about what day it is. The months of the year are taught in LHFHG in Unit 11 (we just did it and my son loved TRY...
