Re: As we move into high school, the design of the guides...
I vote for the daily boxes. When I was in the choosing stage, MFW, Sonlight and HOD were some of the companies I researched. Although there are MANY reasons I prefer HOD over the others, the daily grid was definitely a selling point. MFW has great content, but every time I looked at their plans, I w...

Re: Rod and Staff, really 15 min???
We're doing R&S 4 with my 4th grader. It takes us about 15 minutes to do the oral review questions, read through the lesson and do about 1/2-2/3 of the written work orally. It then takes my ds another 15-25 minutes to do the rest of the written work. On days that focus on writing, it takes him longe...

Re: Dictation Woes
Thank you, Carrie! I knew my ds was supposed to "capture" the picture of the passage in his mind, but I never considered that meant always doing it in manuscript. That makes so much sense!! That's why I love this board and the wisdom so many are willing to share. :) P.S. Julie, thank you also for yo...

Re: Dictation Woes
Are you pointing out all the punctuation and bold words etc. Right before you do the passage. I find this helped my dd tremendously. She was repeating passages for one missed comma or a missed Capital Letter. Sometimes I let her try again later in the day too if its really important to her. Yes, we...

Re: Dictation Woes
Thank you for your suggestions. I never thought of having him write the bold words on the white board. Funny thing is, he never misses those! Perhaps I'll have him do the same with words I think he might miss. I think I'll also follow your advice and insist on the manuscript. I could always do it fo...

Dictation Woes
For a little background, we started HOD with a little bit of LHFHG and then went through Beyond and are now in the middle of Bigger. For spelling, we use HOD dictation, along with R&S Spelling. Last year we did the first set of dictation passages. My ds did fairly well with it, although he occasiona...

Re: storytime vs dithor
I just realized no one answered your post. The storytime and DITHOR books are separate. The storytime books are read TO the student, whereas the DITHOR books are read BY the student.

Thank you for your reply; it was helpful.
I did some more perusing today and found a link to a similar post, with a thorough answer from Carrie.

World Wars and Bigger Hearts
I just realized that the Bigger guide does not cover World War I or II, except through an optional extension book reading. I'm sure there is a very well-thought-out reason for this, but in perusing the board, I haven't been able to find any posts relating to the issue. I do know they are covered in ...

Whitney, One thing that will definitely be an adjustment and take some time to grow into in BIgger is the upped level of readings. It is important to note as you head into these higher level readings that in a Charlotte Mason living books approach to education the parent is not to get between the c...

Julie, your post today was like a breath of fresh air for me. I'm printing it out so I can re-read it and study it more in depth. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to write such a lengthy reply. After reading your response, as well as those from the other ladies, I am feelin...

Re: Guides taking much longer than Carrie and Julie's times
Your ds sounds like a perfectionist to me. Oh, my, yes, he is definitely a perfectionist! (I'll give you one guess where he got that from. ) Doesn't sound like the work is beyond him or anything ... Obviously it sounds like your ds is taking his time and doing things well. The only downfall ...
