Re: DD Wants Public School
To the poster, I am praying for you and your daughter. I agree with the other posters to find out what she thinks it would be like and then educate her. I will continue to pray. Mrsrandolph, I love that quote!!!

Re: Year round schooling compatible with hod?
We have always schooled year around with HOD. It works fine. One son switches guides in May, the other in December. The units in the guides don't have to follow the weekdays either. It is just day 1, day 2, etc. We are rarely on so day 1 matches Monday. If you decide to do a traditional schedule you...

Re: Kids with bad spelling starting written narrations
I am late to this post and haven't read the other replies, but just wanted to share my experience. My son's spelling was so bad when we first started Preparing that I chose the option to have him dictate his written narration to me and I typed as he dictated. Then he copied it. I am pretty sure that...

What a neat program! I am very excited even though we are years away.

Re: Those who don't break for summer
I work, but am home four days a week during the summer so we have always schooled year around because it is just easier when I am home all day. My husband teaches some because of my schedule, but for consistency I like to do the bulk of it if I can. In addition to schooling year around, we also scho...

Re: Dual enrollment
I also teach at a community college. I can tell you I would not want my high school age child in many of the courses taught because I know what is being taught and the attitudes. A young girl in our church recently had an experience at my college where the professor referred to "those stupid Christi...

Re: Placement for an 8 yr old struggling reader and an advan
I agree with the pp. I would not put a 5 yr old in Beyond. Little Hearts, adding phonics/reading as needed, with math and handwriting at whatever level she is at would be perfect. There are many other skills built into each guide, so Little Hearts will be an important foundational year. I would also...

Re: Another cool homeschooling moment thanks to HOD
I couldn't agree more. My 10 yr old has an amazing grasp of history and my 8 yr old with some challenges can converse about events the average adult probably has to think seriously about to get straight. You can't beat living books!

Re: **Please Help** Placement Question
I also think Bigger is the way to go. It will give you a solid start in HOD and allow your kiddos to grow into the various skills. I wouldn't worry about it not being enough, there are lots of skills in Bigger.

Re: What is the importance of diagramming?
I have pondered this question myself and have come to the conclusion that diagramming is important because the skill of writing is important. I think no matter what path our children take (and I have a son who is more likely to end up in a technical trade school than traditional college), they need ...

Re: Little Hearts, Bigger and Preparing...is this doable??
I would not cut out anything in Bigger, as each guide builds on the last guide. You could put your almost 8 yr old in Beyond, but add English 2, cursive, and DITHOR for reading. You could start dictation, but I would look at the spelling lists to make sure that is where she is at. This would certain...

Re: Little Hearts, Bigger and Preparing...is this doable??
I have to admit when I read the title of your post my first thought was, "let's see how we could combine," but it is possible to do 3 guides. It is just best not to have them back to back, and Preparing and Bigger are the most teacher intensive guides. Have you looked carefully at the placement char...

Re: Placement Question
I wouldn't put a 4 1/2 yr old in Little Hearts. I made the mistake of starting both my boys too young and had to slow up along the way. Once we hit Bigger we had trouble. I would use Little Hands with the 4-5 yr old choices. At some point you could also add some gentle phonics to it such as Explode ...

Re: Advice for Ordering Bigger and DITHOR
We didn't do the extensions either, but we read several of the books because they looked so good. I felt they added to the history and we really enjoyed them. The books we read (** means all time favorites): ** Ben and Me (even my 5 yr old loved this one) ** Guns for General Washington Tolliver's Se...

Re: New Homeschooler Please help!
Welcome to HOD and yes, I believe you have found a curriculum you will be pleased with. I have a bin with all the basic supplies and I just quickly glance ahead each unit to make sure there isn't something needed I don't have. That is rare, but always it is just something that could be added to your...
