LHFHG Storytime
So, we have finished Unit 1 of LHFHG, and my daughter isn't doing too well with the questions from Reddy Fox. We haven't read books without pictures with her, so I think that is why she is having a harder time concentrating. But, is this also normal? Also, how do I help her concentrate?

Re: New to board, starting with LHFHG
Sounds like you have a good plan! Even though you have your own science curriculum, you might want to at least look at the science in the boxes each unit. Some of the experiments/activities are fun and super easy! We just started LHFHG two weeks ago (we have completed Unit 1), and my daughter is lov...

Re: Reading aloud vs Independently
Although it could be done, I don't think it is the best. HOD has a program called Emerging Readers for those able to reader but not completely independent yet though. The book list is on the site (look under Beyond or Bigger), and the information on how to use it is in both of those guides as well (...

Re: Need help with what to order!
By reading well, what kinds of books is she reading? DITHOR is 2nd-3rd grade level books. So, if you look at beginning reader books with Level __ on the front, they are Level 4 and higher. Emerging Readers start with Level 2 and go to 4. So, as a 1st grader, ER is probably where she falls unless he ...

Re: help! Last minute second-guessing...
And remember if she does want something new, you can add in something from the right side of Beyond. You already mentioned ER, so that might be enough if she gets the "itch" for something new again. Or maybe start the spelling. I am planning on doing those two with LHFHG this year with my 1st grader.

Re: Using DITHOR with other core curriculum?
Welcome to HOD! I know that some families do use DITHOR outside of HOD's guides. Some people have even used in it co-op situations. It is completely independent (although scheduled) from the other guides, so it would definitely work. As to buy, I would look at the book lists on the website. Find a l...

Re: Singapore Math?
Thanks everyone! StephanieU, I totally get what you mean! I am always surprised by the number of adults that don't know fractions. As for the calculus comment I made earlier, the schools my son loves require calculus in high school in order to do certain majors or to just get in. My son researched ...

Re: Would switching math programs set us back?
Singapore is also a mastery program...you may still find the same issues if you had to switch to public school down the road? It isn't the spiral vs mastery that makes the difference. Some schools use mastery and others use spiral. The big difference is MUS isn't grade level sequences. So, they don...

Re: Math Facts
Timed tests might be a fun way for her to work on them. Just do like 30 seconds or a minute to do as many as she can. Then let her graph her results for a month. I bet she will see them increase. And just start with adding. Once she has adding down better, work on the subtracting. When I taught math...

Re: Singapore Math?
So, it sounds like what you have tried isn't working, so switching to Singapore isn't a bad idea. Singapore is on level with Abeka and Horizons - which is about 1 year ahead of other curriculums. So, as long as he is only 1 "number" behind his actual grade, he is going to be fine. As far as taking C...

Re: Doing too much?
At second grade, finishing Beyond should be enough. There is some grammar in it, and that is probably enough for her. Since she wants to do cursive, I say let her. But, say you are going to do some of the other work first. If you cut out some of the other things, you should have time for it though. ...

Re: Ready for Drawn into Reading?
What I have heard is that is it best to have them at the middle age of the guide unless you want to combine. Also, if possible it is nice to have a break between guides, especially when you get to Preparing and CTC because those are challenging guides for parents and kids normally (with a move to mo...

Re: New to HOD and have 2 questions
Most standardized tests cover language arts and math mainly. But you can look at what your state requires too. I know moms on here have posted that their kids have scored high on the tests using HOD. But each state has different retirements for home schooling. I live in a state that only requires re...
