Re: Thank You Carrie and Julie for a wonderful Conference

I agree! Cinci was the 1st conference that I could just buy all of my HOD stuff, and then spend my time checking out "fun" stuff and anything else I had questions about. The big questions (ie: main curriculum) had been decided, so I could focus on those few smaller areas that I wasn't sure about. Fu...

Re: Spelling and Dictation for Bigger

I'm also doing Bigger next year, and the dictation passages in the guide would be easy for my oldest. She is doing the history extensions, so I'm just going to take passages from her readings and use those for dictation. I've already selected the majority of passages and typed them up, so that my dd...

Re: Emerging Readers or DITHOR

I had to laugh, Julie! I, too, don't always enjoy reading on the college level! ha! In fact, I recently read a book about Lafayette that was probably geared to 5th-6th graders or so, and I just loved it! :-) I've also been "trying" to read "Darwin's Black Box", which has lots of technical microbiolo...

Re: Help choosing for 2 children...

Ladies, What a wonderful discussion! I love when "stuff like this" comes up to keep me grounded in the REALLY important stuff! Jennifer, your post definitely hits on things swirling around in my head. You put it very well and helped me to see it clearly! I love what you said regarding whether or not...

Re: Standardized Testing

OK, I checked into it more, and just like a couple of you said, if a person has a Bachelor's degree, they can administer the Iowa test. Well, now I'm thinking I just might sign up to be an administrator for the Iowa Test and just give it to my kiddos at home. I checked our Ohio forms, and they say t...

Re: Standardized Testing

Hi John's Mom,
Just thought I'd ask you.. did you administer it yourself, too? I was looking at our school district's language, and it said whatever test we chose could be "administered by an approved person." I should check into this more. But thanks for your help!

Re: How much independent work in Bigger?

HI Jennifer Just wanted to say "hi", and note that I'm in the same position as you! I'll be doing Bigger with a 9 (by the fall) and 7 y/o, with a nearly 5 y/o in LHTH and doing TRL and "whatever" else... like you, perhaps a "light K year". Since my youngest son's b-day is October, he'll miss the Ohi...

Re: how much phonics?

Hi Jenntracy, I'm thinking that if a child is reading well in the ERS, you probably do not need further phonics instruction, except on an "as necessary" basis. In other words, if there is a particular sound pattern the child doesn't understand, teach that. And also, you can view your spelling lesson...

Re: Standardized Testing

Thanks for your input, ladies! So now I'm wondering... can the Iowa Test be administered at home? Or just the CAT? If I could administer at home, that would make it so much easier, I think! I would imagine it would remove that "unfamiliar environment" factor when taking the test. By that, I mean tha...
